Baseball

The Vikings defeated Rio Hondo College 10-9 in extra innings on Sunday, May 21 to cap a furious comeback and advance to the state championships. LBCC trailed 8-2 in the top of the fifth inning of the Super Regional Final before scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to the close the gap to 8-5.

The Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Rio Hondo pitcher walked third baseman Tommy Peale with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run.

In the top of the 11th Rio Hondo scored the go-ahead run to make it 9-8, however in the bottom of the inning designated hitter Jon Rodriguez brought in the tying run with a single to right field with the bases loaded. Catcher Derek Junghanel then executed a bunt that landed fair and brought home Peale to ignite the celebration on the Viking bench.

The state championships take place this weekend, May 27-29 in
Fresno.

Men’s Track and Field

The LBCC men’s track and field team totaled 117 points to win the 2006
Southern California team championship at Mt. San Antonio College on May 13.

Freshman Vannie Prudhomme won the SoCal title 110m hurdles (14.37) and the high jump (7-0) and was a member of the second-place 4x400 meter relay team (3:16.00).
The LBCC 4x100 meter relay team won the championship with a time of 40.03.

Women’s Track and Field

The LBCC women’s track and field team totaled 53 points to finish tied for fourth place at the 2006
Southern California team championship at Mt. San Antonio College on May 12.

The Vikings had six top-three finishes and won titles in two events.

Sophomore Angie Wells took first place in the long jump (19-11 1/4) and captured first in the 200 meters (24.40).

LBS

Baseball

The Dirtbags (29-24, 12-6 Big West) are on a hot streak as the regular season winds down, winning 13 of their last 18 games.

The team hosts rival No. 2 Fullerton at
6:30 p.m. this evening in their final regular season matchup. The game will be nationally televised on College Sports Television (Direct TV channel 610).

If
Long Beach State sweeps the series they will get an automatic bid to the Big West tournament and a co-championship with the Titans. If they don’t win every game, the Beach are assured of no less than a second place finish.

Dirtbag right-handed pitcher Andrew Carpenter (7-3, 2.93) steps to the mound in the opening game against
Fullerton’s Wes Roemer. 49er third baseman Evan Longoria is a player to watch out for, with a .362 average, 11 home runs and 43 RBIs this season.

Men's Golf

Ryan Wood shot a two-under 70 in the final day of competition on Saturday, May 20 at the NCAA West Regionals in Tucson, AZ to finish tied for 99th place with a three-day score of 223 (79-74-70). Wood had six birdies on the day including birdies on five of his first seven holes.

Softball

The 49ers (31-22) ended their post-season run with a 3-1 defeat to
San Diego State in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional on Saturday, May 20. Michelle Turner pitched seven innings with no earned runs, no walks and three strikeouts. The Big West pitcher of the year finished the 2006 season with a record 26 victories. Jonae Perez brought home Tiffanie Wedell with a single in the fourth inning to make it 1-0, the only run Long Beach State would score.

LBCC, LBS Round-Up

LBCC

Baseball

The Vikings secured their first South Coast Conference championship in ten years with a dominating 7-1 victory over Pasadena on Saturday afternoon, Apr. 29 at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.

LBCC concluded the regular season with an almost perfect 19-1 record at home. Sophomore first baseman Mike Coladonato went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two stolen bases. Sophomore pitcher Steven Conradi allowed one unearned run in seven innings to help the Vikings win the regular season title.

LBCC took eleven SCC honors and head coach Casey Crook was named SCC Coach of the Year.

The No. 4-seeded Vikings start postseason play this Saturday, May 13 with a
1 p.m. home game against No. 14 Oxnard College. The second game of the best-of-three series is set for 11 a.m. on Sunday and the third game if necessary will follow in the afternoon.

Men’s Golf

The Long Beach City College men’s golf team finished in sixth place at the 2006 COA Men’s Golf Championships.

The event took place Monday, May 8 at the Temecula SCGA Member’s Club.

The Vikings shot 369 and 386 over two rounds for a total of 755. Sophomore Andrew Elliot earned All-State honors with a 146 overall to finish the tournament tied for sixth place.

Women’s Swimming & Diving

The LBCC women scored 203 points to finish in sixth place at the COA Swimming and Diving Championships May 4-6 at
Pasadena City College.

The Vikings set two new school records in relays while Nicole Galaz had an impressive performance, earning 44 points over the weekend with three-top five finishes. Galaz also swam on four relay teams.

Orange Coast College took home the team championship with 385.5 points.

Men’s Volleyball

The Vikings (18-0) made history recently, becoming the second men’s volleyball team in the state to go undefeated during the regular season. The team earned that distinction by defeating
Los Angeles Pierce College in five games to win the state title.

The final scores in the match were 25-13, 23-25, 25-14, 23-25 and 15-5. The regular season title was the fifth overall for LBCC. Naseri Tumanuvao was named state championship MVP after the win over Pierce.

Baseball

The Dirtbags (26-20-1) defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions 5-3 at home on May 9.

Freshman relief pitcher Vance Worley took the mound in the fourth inning and had a strong performance to dash any hopes the Lions had of coming back. Worley went five and two-third innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out eight straight batters.

The Beach opened up a big lead in the first, taking a commanding 4-1 lead. Shane Peterson scored what was to be the eventual game winner with a sacrifice fly. Brandon Godfrey contributed with two RBI, going 3-for-5 at the plate.

The 49ers host UC Santa Barbara in a three game series starting this Friday.

Softball

The 49ers (28-19, 11-4 Big West) have a chance to win their third straight Big West Conference Title this weekend.

The team finishes the regular season with three games at UC Santa Barbara while conference rival CS Fullerton, also with an 11-4 league record, host UC Riverside. If the two teams have identical records after the series, then they will share the title.

However, the Titans will get an automatic playoff bid because they took 2-of-3 from the Beach this season.

Women’s Tennis

The No. 27-ranked
Long Beach State women’s tennis team (21-4, 7-0 Big West) won their third consecutive Big West Conference Championship and received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Beach earned a second seed in the USC bracket and will play the
University of New Mexico today at 11 a.m.
The 49ers are led by head coach Jenny-Hilt Costello, who in her ninth season captured the most wins of any women’s tennis coach in school history.

Men’s Golf

Junior Ryan Wood has been selected to compete individually at the 2006 NCAA Men’s Golf West Regionals. The event takes place May 18-20 at the Tucson National Golf Course in Tucson, AZ.

Wood became the second 49er to receive an individual NCAA at-large berth, the other being John Mallinger in 2001. Wood ended the season with an average score of 72.53 in 19 rounds of play.

Track & Field

The 49ers have advanced to the second round of the Big West Championships at CS Northridge.

Chris Richardson won the decathlon and Jaime Cuthbert-Allen finished second and Lauren Reimer finished fifth in the heptathlon.

The 49er men are in first place with 10 points and the women are in second with 11 points. The men are two points ahead of the Matadors while the women trail CSUN by six points.

Baseball

The Long Beach City College baseball team (22-6, 10-1 SCC) shut out South Coast Conference rival El Camino College 10-0 at Joe Hicks Memorial Field on Mar. 25.

The Vikings opened things up in the third inning, scoring nine runs. Sophomore Tommy Peale pitched six scoreless innings to improve his record to 8-0. Peale also contributed at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two RBI.

Center fielder Chris Cordova went 3 for 5 on the day with two RBI, two runs and a double.

The Vikings host
Cerritos at noon this Saturday, Apr. 1.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball team (9-0, 3-0 WSC) won their ninth straight match with a 3-0 Western State Conference win over Santa Barbara City College Wednesday night, Mar. 22.
The Vikings won by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 26-24. Freshman outside hitter Derrick Seay posted six kills, two blocks and two digs.

The Vikings host El Camino College today at
6 p.m.

Men’s Golf

The 49ers men’s golf team tied for seventh place with UC Santa Barbara at the 60th Annual Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in
Santa Cruz. The tournament was postponed due to rain and the final round was cancelled.

The 49ers shot a two-day score of 593 (297, 296). Brett Lederer tied for fourth place after shooting a one-over 141 (70-71).

Long Beach State will next be in action on Apr. 15-16 when they travel to the U.S. Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course.

Baseball

The Dirtbags (12-15) will open Big West play this weekend having lost seven in a row. The LBS baseball team was swept for the second straight weekend, this time at No. 4-ranked CS Fullerton. The latest defeat was 6-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The seven straight losses tie the 2004 club for the longest losing streak since 1988. The Dirtbags had to go deep into their bullpen on Sunday, using six pitchers including a career-best performance from Brett Andrade, who pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.

The Beach hopes to turn things around at home this weekend in a three game series against Big West rival UC Irvine beginning today.

Men’s Basketball

The Vikings’ season ended last Friday with an 84-79 quarterfinal loss to
West Valley College in Fresno.
Sophomore Pearson Smith led LBCC with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists.
Long Beach City College made its first appearance in the COA Basketball Championships since 1999 and were the South’s fourth seed coming into the tournament.

The Vikings end the season with a 20-15 overall record.

Baseball

The LBCC baseball team (18-6, 6-1 SCC) defeated South Coast Conference rival
Compton College 5-1 Tuesday behind a strong performance from starting pitcher Tommy Peale.
The sophomore right-hander improved to 6-0 on the season. Peale allowed one run on seven hits in eight and two-thirds innings.

The Vikings return home from a three game road trip on Mar. 23 as they take on
L.A. City College at 2 p.m.

Men’s Basketball

The 49ers lost to Pacific 70-78 in the championship game of the 2006 Big West conference tournament in
Anaheim on Saturday, Mar. 11.

The defeat came despite a career-high 27 points from senior Shawn Hawkins. Junior Aaron Nixon contributed with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists.

In the semifinal game against UC Irvine Nixon nailed a memorable three-pointer from the corner as the final buzzer sounded to give Long Beach State a thrilling 75-73 win. Nixon scored 28 points and hit six baskets from downtown.

The 49ers set a school-record with 17 three-pointers in the win over
Irvine. They finished the season at 18-12 overall.

Baseball

The No. 19-ranked Dirtbags (12-9) lost to No. 16-ranked
Texas in Austin by a score of 7-3 on Sunday afternoon. LBS pitcher Vance Worley recorded his fourth defeat of the season in the rubber game.

The Dirtbags host
Wichita State in a three-game series starting Friday at Blair Field.

Men’s Basketball

The Long Beach City College men’s basketball team (19-14) needs a win on Saturday against visiting UC Riverside to go to the state championship tournament in Fresno.

The Vikings, who are seeded 11th in the South, upset No. 6 Compton College 85-82 last Friday to advance to the second-round regional playoff game.

Baseball

The Vikings defeated
Solano College 5-2 last Saturday afternoon at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.

With two outs and the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore third baseman Tommy Peale drove home three runs with a double to deep centerfield.

Freshman Josh Williams pitched eight innings for his first win of the season and the fourth straight win for LBCC.

The Vikings were set to open South Coast Conference play on Tuesday, Feb. 28 when they hosted

Men’s Volleyball

The Vikings are 3-0 in match play to start the season. The team swept
Palomar College 3-0 at home on Friday, Feb. 24. LBCC won the match by scores of 25-6, 26-24 and 25-20. Sophomore outside hitter Sam Pech led the Vikings with 16 kills, 7 digs and 3 blocks.

Long Beach travels to Irvine Valley this evening for a 6 p.m. match.

Softball

The No. 5-ranked Long Beach City College softball team (8-3) ended their eight-game winning streak with a 1-0 loss to visiting Antelope Valley College in a non-conference game.

Antelope Valley scored the only run in the top of the sixth inning off LBCC reliever Sadie Barton.

The Vikings host Riverside in a doubleheader this Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m.

Baseball

The No. 15-ranked Long Beach State baseball team (9-5) lost to UCLA 6-3 at home last Tuesday, Feb. 28. Bruins pitcher Brian Schroeder threw seven solid innings, retiring the first nine Dirtbags who stepped to the plate.

Dirtbags starter Shane Peterson (0-1) gave up three runs on two hits during his three innings on the mound.

Long Beach State finishes the home stand with a three-game series against Baylor starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Women’s Golf

The 49ers finished in second place at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational at the Copper River Country Club. The team shot a school-record 284 in Tuesday’s final round of competition.

The Beach finished nine shots off the pace of tournament champion UC Irvine. The total score of 589 over two days of competition also set a new school record.

Senior Hayley Wilkinson shot a three-under 69 on Tuesday and finished the tournament in second place overall with a one-under 143 (74-69).

The 49ers travel to Vegas next for the UNLV Spring Invitational March 13-14.

Women’s Water Polo

The No. 7-ranked
Long Beach State women’s water polo team (9-4) split a pair of matches last weekend, finishing in 11th place at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Invitational.

The 49ers lost to the host team as the Gauchos won the match 7-3. The Beach rebounded after the loss by defeating UC Irvine 9-5.

Christina Wensman notched four goals in the win over the Anteaters.

LBSU heads to
San Jose State and Stanford this weekend for a pair of afternoon matches.

Men’s Basketball

Aaron Nixon scored a career-high 33 points and Mark Dawson had a career-high 16 points as the 49ers (14-11) picked up a 96-92 OT win at UC Davis last Saturday afternoon. The Beach out-scored the Aggies 17-13 in the extra frame.

After a lead change in OT, Kejuan Johnson scored seven consecutive points as the 49ers secured the victory. The 49ers struggled with free throws, going 17-31 from the charity line.

Baseball

The No. 15 ranked Dirtbags (4-3) have dropped three straight games after starting the season with four straight wins.

The latest defeat came on Feb. 14 in Malibu with a 3-2 loss to No. 14 ranked Pepperdine. After the Waves jumped out to a 3-0 lead, the 49ers closed the gap to 3-2 in the seventh inning with a leadoff homer by right fielder Sean Boatright and a run-scoring single to left field by catcher Tito Cruz.

Long Beach State ends their road trip with a trip to Houston today for the Coca Cola Classic, hosted by Rice University. The first game is against Lamar at 11 a.m. followed by a weekend pair against No. 5 ranked Rice and Oklahoma.

Men's Basketball

The 49ers men's basketball team (12-11, 7-5 Big West) moved into sole possession of third place in the Big West Conference with a dominating 88-79 victory over the Fullerton Titans Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the Pyramid.

With the win the 49ers sweeped the season series with the Titans and tied a single-game record for three-pointers with 14 out of 26 attempts.

Jibril Hodges scored a team high 17 points including five three-pointers. The 49ers travel to New York City this weekend as part of ESPN's Bracket Buster game.

They take on Manhattan on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. PST.

Softball

The 49ers softball team (3-3) upset No. 2 ranked UCLA 1-0 on Wednesday night, Feb. 15 at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

Junior transfer Michelle Turner pitched a five-hit shutout, posting her second win of the season. Junior Kourtnee Gervasi brought home the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single that helped Turner reach home plate.

The 49ers head to UC Santa Barbara Feb. 17-19 to compete in the 2006 Commercial Capital Classic.

Women's Tennis

The No. 47 ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team (4-2, 2-0 Big West) defeated Cal State Northridge 6-1 on Wednesday evening, Feb. 15 at Northridge.

The 49ers won five of six singles matches in straight sets and all three doubles matches. The team is undefeated in their last four matches.

The 49ers next host the University of Hawaii on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. on the 49er Campus Courts.

Men's Basketball

The Long Beach State men's basketball team (9-9, 4-3 Big West) had their three-game winning streak come to end Jan. 28 against UC Irvine at the Pyramid.

The Anteaters remained undefeated in Big West conference play with a 73-67 over the 49ers. The loss came despite a late rally by LBS, coming from 19 points behind to close the gap to four points with 1:49 left in regulation.

Jibril Hodges had a game-high 24 points and Shawn Hawkins finished with a double-double (11 points and 10 rebounds).

The 49ers travel to Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 4. The 5:05 p.m. game will be televised live on Fox Sports West 2. The 49ers will travel to New York City on Feb. 18 to take on Manhattan College. All eight Big West teams are heading east for the ESPN/Bracket Buster format.

Women's Basketball

The Long Beach State women's basketball team (14-5, 7-0) won their seventh straight game with a 79-50 defeat of UC Irvine at home last Saturday afternoon.

The 49ers are a perfect 7-0 against Big West opponents this season and are 11-1 at the Pyramid. Crystal McCutcheon led the Beach with 18 points and Jayme Connors contributed with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Long Beach State travels to CS Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 4 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Baseball

The Dirtbags open the 2006 season on Friday, Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. when they host the No. 17-ranked USC Trojans at Blair Field. The series continues Saturday at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles at 1 p.m. before heading back to Blair Field Sunday for a noon game.

With 23 new players on the roster, the Beach are ranked No. 16 in Collegiate Baseball's pre-season poll and are predicted by the Big West Coaches Poll to finish second in the Big West Conference behind CS Fullerton.

Men's Volleyball

The No. 1-ranked 49ers men's volleyball team (8-1, 401 MPSF) defeated visiting USC on Jan. 27 in four games by scores of 31-33, 30-18, 30-20 and 30-26. Paul Lotman posted a double-double (16 kills, 12 digs) and a .440 attack percentage in the win.

The 16 kills for Lotman and teammate Francisco Valdez were career-highs. LBSU setter Tyler Hildebrand had 49 assists, five digs and two kills as the team posted a .299 hitting percentage.

Long Beach State travels to State College, PA this weekend for matches against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on Friday, Feb. 3 and Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Men's Basketball

The 49ers hope to continue their winning streak when the regular season begins this weekend in Santa Barbara.

LBSU closed out the pre-season by defeating their last three opponents including a dominating performance against visiting UC Davis 77-48.

Shawn Hawkins tied his career-high in scoring and rebounds with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The 49ers defense held the Aggies to 33 percent for the game.

The team opens up Big West play against the Gauchos on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Women's Basketball

The Beach (7-5) lost a close game 67-64 at UC Davis on Monday, Jan. 2. The defeat snapped a three game winning streak.

Crystal McCutcheon led the 49ers in scoring with 19 points in addition to six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

LBSU begins conference play at the Pyramid as they tip off against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m.

Men’s Basketball

The Long Beach State men’s basketball team (2-6) lost a close game 92-86 in
Malibu to the Pepperdine Waves on Dec. 17.

Jibril Hodges led the 49ers in scoring with 18 points. Despite out-rebounding the Waves 40 to 38, free throws were a problem for the 49ers as they went 15-27 (.556).

The team hopes for better results as they begin a three-game home stand at the Pyramid. The Beach takes on Cornell on Dec. 30 and UC Davis on Jan. 2. All game times are
7:35 p.m.

Women’s Basketball

The Long Beach State women’s basketball team (5-4) ended a two-game losing streak with a 76-38 rout of Southern Methodist Universty on Dec. 19 at the Pyramid.

The 38 points were the fewest an opponent has scored in the 11-year history of the Walter Pyramid. Crystal McCutcheon led the team with 23 points and the 49ers grabbed a season-high 50 rebounds.

Women’s Soccer

The Vikings women’s soccer team recently earned the honor of being the No. 1 team in the final National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America/Adidas JC Division III (non-scholarship schools) national rankings. It was the third national championship over the past four seasons for LBCC.

The Vikings defeated
Cypress College 2-0 to win the state championship and finished the season with a 25-1-3 overall record.

The team also captured their sixth straight South Coast Conference Title with a
10-1-1 conference record.

Football

The Vikings (8-3) scored 28 fourth-quarter points for a come-from-behind 49-37 victory over Allan Hancock College in the 2005 Mission Conference American Bowl at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, Nov. 18.

The special teams came through for City College in the win. Ryan Howard had a big game. The freshman cornerback returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and ran a 78-yard punt return into the end zone in the fourth quarter to give the Vikings the lead.
It was the third straight bowl game win for the team.

Women’s Soccer

On Saturday, Dec. 3 the No. 4-seeded Vikings advanced to the state tournament final four with a 4-3 penalty kill shootout win over No. 1-seed L.A Pierce College after a 1-1 win tie in the regulation period and a scoreless overtime.

Sophomore forward Mallory Olloque scored the game winning goal.

Next up for LBCC in their quest for a sixth state championship is the North’s No. 1-seed Lassen College on Dec. 10 at Fresno Pacific University. The winner will take on either American River or Cypress on Sunday, Dec. 11 in the final.

Men’s Basketball

Long Beach State
(2-4) allowed the Sacramento State Hornets to score 11 unanswered points late in the second half to lose 106-94 on Monday evening, Dec. 5 in Sacramento. The 49ers’ Jazz Henderson scored a career-high 23 points in the defeat.

Long Beach State hosts San Jose State on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2:05 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.

Women’s Basketball

The 49ers (3-2) secured their third straight victory with a come-from-behind 58-52 overtime win against San Francisco at the Walter Pyramid on Sunday, Dec. 4. Crystal McCutcheon scored a game-high 14 points and Val Willhout contributed a career-high 11 points a career-tying seven rebounds.

The 49ers travel to Montana on Dec. 10 before heading back home on Dec. 17 for a 2 p.m. game against Loyola Marymount at the Walter Pyramid.

Men’s Basketball

 

The 49ers men’s basketball team (0-2) lost to the Cal Golden Bears 88-69 on Monday, Nov. 21 in Berkeley.

 

Senior guard Jibril Hodges led the 49ers with 15 points and junior guard Aaron Nixon contributed 13. Cal out-rebounded Long Beach State 47 to 30 and had five players with double digits.

 

The team returns to the Walter Pyramid on Sunday, November 27 for their home opener against San Francisco State at 2:05 p.m.

 

Women’s Volleyball

 

The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team (23-5, 12-2 Big West) earned its eighth Big West title and secured an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament on Saturday evening, Nov. 19 with a sweep of CS Northridge, 30-13, 30-21, 30-21.

 

The 49ers claimed their first conference title since 2001, the year the team reached the NCAA finals.

 

Long Beach State hosts the Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 25 and 26. Participants include UC Santa Barbara, South Dakota State, Florida A & M and Pittsburgh.

Men’s Basketball

The 16th state-ranked Long Beach City College men’s basketball team (0-1) fell to No. 5 Fullerton 83-66 in their season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at the Hall of Champions Gym.

Sophomore forward Chris Fields scored a game-high 25 points in the defeat. Foul and turnovers proved costly for the Vikings. Both Demetrius Hazel and Fields fouled out and Fullerton scored 27 points off of 26 Long Beach turnovers.

The Vikings compete at the two-day Santa Rosa College tournament this weekend and will take on host Santa Rosa at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 in its opening round game.

Women’s Basketball

The Vikings women’s basketball team (1-0) defeated Victor Valley College 62-43 in their season opener on Monday, Nov. 7 at the Hall of Champions Gym.
LBCC used a full-court pressure defense to score 38 points off 41 Victor Valley turnovers. Freshman Christina Edwards scored a game-high 19 points in the win.
The Vikings return to action this weekend when they compete in the two-day Santa Barbara City College tournament.

Men’s Basketball

College
basketball returns to the Walter Pyramid on Friday, Nov. 11 as the 49ers host Cal State Los Angeles in the only exhibition game before the season officially begins on Nov. 18 at Nevada-Las Vegas.

Coach Larry Reynolds is coming off a 10-20 season last year and will have seven returnees and nine newcomers to work with this season. The seniors are Jibril Hodges, Shawn Hawkins and Keion Kindred.

Women’s Volleyball

The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team (19-5, 8-2 Big West) earned a 3-0 win against UC Irvine in front of a season-high 2,290 fans at the Pyramid on Nov. 5.

Senior Heather Laudato set the record for all-time career digs after she posted 13 digs in the match.

The 49ers head to UC Riverside for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Nov. 11.

Water Polo

A late rally by the 49ers men’s water polo team (15-12, 0-4 MPSF) wasn’t enough to defeat No. 4 UCLA as the Bruins claimed a 9-8 victory Sunday afternoon, Nov. 6 at the 49er campus pool.

Long Beach State has lost seven straight and is winless in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The 49ers have a three game road trip next as they travel to UC Davis on Friday, Nov. 11, Pacific on Nov. 12 and California on Nov. 13.

Men’s Water Polo

The 49ers (15-9, 0-1 MPSF) dropped a close 10-8 match to the No. 3 ranked Stanford Cardinals on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the 49er Campus Pool. Stanford scored four goals in the third quarter to win. Peter Varellas led the Cardinals with three goals including the go-ahead goal with only three seconds left on the clock in the second quarter. Erik Geoffrey led the 49ers in scoring with four goals.

Eighth-ranked Long Beach State visits No. 1 ranked USC on Saturday morning, Oct. 29. The Trojans are undefeated in their last seven games.

Men’s Golf

The 49ers’ men’s golf team finished in fourth place at the 49er Collegiate Classic at the Cabarrus Country Club in Concord, NC.

Long Beach shot a 306 in the final round on Tuesday, Oct. 25, for a final three-round score of 907. LBSU senior Ryan Panichpakdee led the 49ers with an eight-over-par 224 (74-73-77) which earned him fifth place overall.

Long Beach State hosts the Del Walker Intercollegiate held on Nov. 3-4 at the Virginia Country Club.

Women’s Soccer

One point is all the No. 25 ranked 49er women’s soccer team (12-4-1, 3-2-0 Big West) needs for the school’s first post-season trip to the Big West Tournament. A win or a tie at UC Riverside on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. or at home against CS Fullerton on Sunday, Oct. 30 will catapult the team into the post-season while two wins will give them at least a share of their first ever conference title and the right to host the four team conference tournament. Two losses would end the season for the 49ers.

The team brings a school-record tying 12 wins and a perfect 9-0-0 home record into this weekend.

Women’s Volleyball

The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team (16-4, 5-1 Big West) won their sixth straight match with a 3-0 shutout of host UC Davis in a non-conference game on Saturday night, Oct. 24.

Alex Crimes led the 49ers with 12 kills and five blocks.

No. 23 ranked LBSU returns home on Friday, Oct. 28 to face Cal Poly and takes on UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 29 at the Pyramid.

Football

The Vikings football team (4-3, 1-1 American Division) committed five turnovers including four fumbles and one interception in a 30-22 loss at Riverside. The defeat came despite a season-high 465 yards of total offense.

Riverside overcame a 22-16 Long Beach lead in the fourth quarter as they scored two unanswered touchdowns to seal the victory.

Sophomore Viking quarterback Alex Aispuro attempted a season-best 62 passes with 37 completions for a season-high 384 yards and three touchdowns.

The Vikings travel to Fullerton College next for an American Division game on Saturday, Oct. 29 with a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Women’s Soccer

It is a season of firsts for the 49ers women’s soccer team this year. With a record of 10-3-1 Long Beach State is nationally ranked for the first time in school history. The team is currently ranked No. 25 in Soccer America magazine. Other notable firsts so far this year include a nationally ranked recruiting class, a regional ranking and two national players of the week (midfielders Kim Silos and Dana Farquhar).

The 49ers remained undefeated at George Allen Field with a dominating 3-1 home victory over UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 9. They host Idaho on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m.

Men’s Water Polo

The eighth-ranked 49ers men’s water polo team (14-5) beat Princeton 12-7 behind a strong performance from Jay Gerardi. The junior driver scored a career-high four goals against the Tigers on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 8 at the Cal Baptist Tournament in Riverside.

In the second game against Cal Baptist, senior center forward Brett McCleave scored four goals in the 9-7 win.

The 49ers participate in the NorCal Tournament this weekend.

Women’s Volleyball

Long Beach Sate (13-4, 3-1 Big West) scored two 3-0 sweeps against conference rivals UC Irvine on Oct. 6 and CS Northridge on Oct. 7.

Erika Chidester led the team, averaging 4.17 kills, 1.5 digs and 1 block per game.

The 49ers hope to continue their perfect record at home when they host CS Fullerton on Friday, Oct. 14 and UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Pyramid.

Cross Country

The Big West conference handed the Long Beach State Cross Country team Athlete of the Week honors in all categories. Senior Jimmy Grabow earned the third honor of his career. Grabow recently ran the second fastest-time in school history with a seventh-place finish at the Stanford Invitational (24:03) last Saturday.

Junior Nicole Blalock became the first 49er female to be honored. Blalock, despite being sick for the past two and a half weeks, finished 27 seconds shy of her school record with an 18th place finish in the 6K race (22:19).
The 49er “B” team travels to Riverside on Oct. 1 for the UC Riverside Invitational.

Women’s Soccer

Long Beach State
(7-2-1) freshman mid-fielder Kim Silos scored two game-winning goals in overtime last week to earn national recognition from Soccerbuzz.com and Soccer America. Freshman goalkeeper Liz Ramos earned a national statistical ranking with a 0.43 goals against average. Both players were the first in program history to be nationally recognized.

The team recently broke an eight-game unbeaten streak as they where shut out by USC 2-0 in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The 49ers start Big West play on Friday, Sept. 30 with a match at Pacific and then on Sunday afternoon at Cal State Northridge.

Men’s Water Polo

The No. 8 nationally ranked 49ers (12-4) took three out of four games last weekend. Long Beach State dropped the final game to UC San Diego by a score of 12-10. The 49ers have reached double digits in scoring in 13 of their first 16 games.

The team looks for revenge this weekend as they head south to face rival UC San Diego in a Saturday match.

The Vikings football team (3-1) scored an impressive 49-28 victory in a Mission Conference interdivision game at Golden West College on Saturday night, Sept. 24.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Aispuro tossed four touchdown passes and sophomore running back Grant Thorne had a program first 100-yard rushing game and carried the ball in the end zone three times.

The defense shined with two touchdowns on a blocked punt and an interception return.

The Vikings host rival Cerritos College on Saturday, Oct. 1 in a 5 p.m. kick off at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Men’s Soccer

The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team (7-5-2) lost 3-1 to visiting Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
Freshman midfielder Willie Obregon scored the only goal for the Vikings in the 45th minute of the first half.

The team hopes to rebound on Friday, Oct. 14 when they travel to Cerritos College for a 4 p.m. South Coast Conference game.

Women’s Volleyball


The Vikings (4-8, 2-1 SCC) beat East Los Angeles College 3-1 at home on Wednesday, Oct. 12. LBCC sophomore outside hitter Natalie Seiuli posted her first triple-double of the season to lead the team to victory.

The Vikings have a home court match against South Coast Conference rival Mt. San Antonio College on Friday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.

Football

The Long Beach City College football team (3-2) lost a close game to Mission Conference interdivision rival Cerritos College 28-24 on Oct. 1 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Falcons took a 14-7 lead into the second half but the Vikings scored 17 unanswered points before Cerritos regained the lead permanently late in the fourth to seal the win. Vikings quarterback Alex Aispuro threw two touchdown passes to freshman wide receiver LaTroy Dinkins and sophomore wide receiver Eric Williams.

LBCC hosts Mt. San Antonio College in their American Division opener on Oct. 15 with a 5 p.m. kickoff at Veterans stadium.

The Vikings (2-0) defeated Moorpark 39-14 on Saturday night, Sept. 10 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The defense held non-conference opponent Moorpark to 181 yards of offense with two forced fumbles, seven broken passes, two sacks, one interception, a blocked field goal and a blocked punt.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Aispuro threw four touchdown passes, completing 18 of 30 pass attempts to total 223 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Stanley Franks caught two touchdown passes for a total of five receptions and 74 yards.

LBCC hosts Saddleback College on Saturday, Sept. 17 in a Mission Conference interdivision game starting at 5 p.m.

Men’s Soccer

The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team (4-1-1) are ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association/adidas junior college Division III national rankings for the first time in school history.

The No. 18 ranked Vikings’ only loss of the season came on Sunday, Sept. 11 to Mt. San Antonio College 1-0 in the championship game of the Allen Hancock Tournament.

Women’s Soccer

The Vikings (8-0-1) continued their junior college national-record 84-game unbeaten streak with a 2-0 shutout of visiting Antelope Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Leotti scored both goals for the No. 3 nationally-ranked Long Beach City College women’s soccer team. Freshman goalie Sarah Phillips posted her seventh shutout of the season.

Women’s Volleyball

The Vikings (1-2) lost a non-conference match to visiting Cypress College on Wednesday, Sept. 13 by a final score of 3-1. After starting the season strong with a 3-0 win at home against Rio Hondo College, the women’s volleyball team has dropped two straight (the team lost to non-conference opponent Santa Monica College 3-0 on Friday, September 9).

Players posting team-best numbers in the losing effort included three sophomores – middle blocker Meaghan Sefuiva (15 kills), setter Natalie Seiuli (31 assists) and libero Heather Ritter (21 digs).

The Vikings look to rebound on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they compete in the Victor Valley Quad tournament.

Women’s Water Polo

Second-ranked Long Beach City College
(4-1, 1-0 SCC) won their home and South Coast Conference opener on Wednesday, Sept. 14 with a commanding 17-3 victory over Pasadena.

Sophomore center Julie DeLoach and freshman driver Kristin Swart led the Vikings’ attack with three goals each.
The team returns to action next Wednesday, Sept. 21 when they hit the road to take on conference rival Cerritos.

Men’s Golf

The 49ers men’s golf team tied for third place last weekend at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Col. Long Beach State shot a 288 in the final round on Sunday, Sept. 11 for a total score of 875 – seven shots behind the first place Air Force Academy (868). Junior Jeremy Keller led the team with a three-under-par 213 (71-73-69).

The 49ers hit the links on Sept. 19-20 at the Northwest Collegiate Classic in Corvallis, Ore.

Women’s Golf

The 49ers finished in fourth place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colorado. The team shot a 298 in the final round on Tuesday, Sept. 13 for a total score of 887. Sophomore Kay Hoey finished in eighth place with a score of 216 (70-73-73).

LBS competes in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Washington on Oct. 10-12.

Women’s Soccer

The Long Beach State women’s soccer team (4-1-0) defeated visiting Hawaii 4-2 on Monday, Sept. 12 to win their own 49er Classic.

Freshman Kim Silos scored a hat trick with two second half goals including a fast break goal at 82:47 to clinch the win for the 49er’s. Offensive honors went to Silos while goalie Liz Ramos was named defensive MVP.
LBSU travels to Las Vegas this weekend for the Adidas UNLV Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Women’s Volleyball

The 49ers (5-2) finished 2-1 last weekend at the UNLV Classic. They beat Rutgers and UNLV while losing to Louisville.

Senior Heather Laudato is now No. 2 all time in program history with 1364 career digs. Laudato needs only 215 more digs to claim the all time record. No. 25-ranked Long Beach State travels south this weekend for the University of San Diego tournament.

They face American University on Friday, Sept. 16 followed by two games on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Arkansas and host San Diego.

Men’s Water Polo

The No. 6 nationally-ranked Long Beach State men’s water polo team (8-0) went undefeated in four games at the Inland Empire Classic, scoring at least 12 goals in each game. They are off to their best start since 1981 when the team went 10-1 at the beginning of the season.

The 49ers are participating in the annual SoCal Tournament this weekend. They battle Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Corona Del Mar High School in the first game and either USC or Redlands in the second game.

Women’s Soccer

The 49er’s (1-1-0) defeated the visiting San Jose State Spartans 4-0 in their home opener on Aug. 30.

Junior defender/forward Elizabeth Romo recorded the second hat trick in Long Beach State history when she scored on a breakaway in the 75th minute of the second half.

The 49ers continue their four-game home stand against Idaho State Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball

The No. 24-ranked LBSU women’s volleyball team (2-0, 0-0 Big West) opened the season with a 3-0 sweep of Long Island at the Mizuno Invitational held at The Pyramid on Aug. 26.

Sophomore middle blocker Alexis Crimes scored a match high 15 kills and a match best eight blocks in the victory. In the second game on Aug. 27 the 49er’s defeated Sacramento State 3-2. Game scores were 19-30, 30-24, 25-30, 30-24, and 15-11.

The team will be on the road for three straight weeks, starting with two games against Big 10 teams Michigan and Ohio State at the Sports Imports Classic hosted by OSU Sept. 2-3.

The next home game is against UC Davis on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
