This film was very intriguing.  Not exactly sure what I think about it yet.  It revolves around the notion of a central character spending some of his time in a dream, and some of it in reality.  And like most dream movies, it runs the risk of being too complicated, too contrived, and too detached.  But I'm not sure if it's any of those.  It is definitely complicated; a film that would almost certainly respond well to repeated viewings.  It is very contrived, no doubt about that either.  But, it's not detached.  And that's probably what makes it worthwhile.  In fact, there are some very striking moments.  (One scene between Cruise and Diaz offers some profound insights into modern relationships, and why they so often go wrong.) Finally, though, I felt that too much time was spent in the dream.  When you find out how much of the film never actually happened, it feels like you've been mislead a little; that you've been wasting your time.  (A re-watch would probably help here, as well.)  Cinematically, there are some great scenes.  Especially anything that is done with masks.  Also a great scene where Tom Cruise runs through Times Square and it is completely empty.  Seeing Tom Cruise ugly was also an unusual (and somewhat invigorating) experience.  I also really don't like the way Crowe uses music.  It's very distracting at times.  I'll have to see this again before I can be confident that I am rating it appropriately.  There are so many twists and turns, and so many conflicting clues along the way.  It will either get much better or much worse.  I'll just have to wait and see.
