| This is the story of an Everyman who became Superman. David Dunn is a superhero. But he doesn't know it. During the course of the film, he discovers his superhuman powers and learns to deal with his new-found ability. But more importantly, he comes to grips with his new-found responsibility. Sounds like a strange idea, doesn't it? It comes from the fertile mind of M. Night Shyamalan, and it is absolutely amazing. Despite its superhuman trappings, the film really works because it is profoundly and beautifully human. There is a scene where David Dunn realizes just how much his marriage is getting in his way that is very hard to watch. So much about his character can be understood simply by his actions. And in direct contrast to this scene is the moment where his wife confronts him about whether or not he has been unfaithful. These moments are moving, and have a real emotional impact, primarily because they are so very, very true. The cast carries it off spectacularly as well, especially Samuel L. Jackson, whose Elijah Price is one of the most memorable movie characters I have ever seen. And the ending is note perfect. M. Night Shyamalan now has my complete confidence. He has shown himself the master of every part of the film-making process. The Sixth Sense was primarily a great film because of the acting, (Haley Joel Osment, in particular). Signs was a great film because of M. Night's direction. But this one was great because of its script. Which is probably why it is my favorite of his works so far. A must see film. "I almost gave up hope. There were so many times I questioned myself. I've made so many sacrifices. But it's all been worth it." |
