Over the past few months, I've watched a bunch of movies about drug addiction.  Some of them are famous, some are not so famous.  This is probably the most famous.  And probably also the least effective, at least in my opinion.  Somehow, I was never really drawn into the story or the characters.  There were a few exceptions: Benicio Del Toro's portrayal of a good/crooked Mexican cop was riveting, and well deserving of Oscar consideration.  And Christensen's portrayal of a teen struggling with addiction is also pretty engrossing.  But they are not on screen enough to make up for the pair of Douglases being there as much as they are.  Michael Douglas' character is simply boring.  No other way to explain it.  And his wife, although she - strangely enough - plays his opponent in the movie, is almost equally uncompelling.  So, I started to concentrate on the visuals.  That was a big mistake.  Pretty soon, I started to notice that all the stuff in the US was blue, and all the stuff in Mexico was yellow.  And that rapidly became irritating.  Peter Andrews, who is actually Steven Soderbergh with an assumed name, was not good.  His work in Ocean's 11 was good, but this seemed a lot more gimmicky.  And I often felt there were scenes that he had included for their emotional impact; an impact that they simply failed to create.  Overall, a major disappointment.
