I wanted to watch this film because it was made by an LACC alumna.  Luckily, I wasnt really expecting too much, or I would have been disappointed.  It was very, very formulaic.  The story was nothing extraordinary.  In fact, it was pretty much nothing.  It was however, nicely shot; pleasant visuals all around.  The acting was very mixed.  McTeer, who has a sizable reputation and was clearly the main draw, was very wooden, and almost completely unbelievable.  Jane Adams was terrible, as was E. Katherine Kerr.  Emmy Rossum was solid, if predictable, and Pat Carroll was also respectable.  Strangely enough, however, Quinn was outstanding.  I dont know what he was even doing in this movie, but he gives a fine performance.  Too bad it is largely wasted.  This is not a strong entry for LACC.  Hopefully, I can find something better out there somewhere.  Or maybe Ill just have to make it myself.  (One quick aside: the music in the film is wonderful.  It makes fine use of the rich American folkmusic tradition.  There just wasn't enough story to supporr it.)
