This film is, without a doubt, the most extraordinary war movie I have ever seen.  It portrays the violence and confusion of warfare better than any movie I have ever seen, or would ever want to see.  Spielberg succeeds spectacularly, not only in portraying the grit, danger and sheer power of combat, but in drawing the audience into that experience as well.  As I watched, I was able to understand more than ever the courage and convictions of my grandfather and his generation.  I was also able to understand why he is so reluctant, along with others from that time, to even speak about these events.  (Apparently, when Spielberg showed the film to some veterans, tande hey were severely shaken, so accurately did he portray the evens of D-Day.)  The movie is profoundly moving because it serves as a tribute to those men, and shows their descendents what they were willing to undergo for America, and for the freedom of the whole world.  The actual story, based on real-life events, seems to become almost a side-note compared to the portrayal of WWII combat.  I was very glad that I watched this film, but I don't want to watch it again, at least not for a very long time.  That would be to take Spielberg's message far too lightly.  Some day I may be able to watch this film again, and to make a judgment about its artistic merits, but not yet.  Let me simply say that watching this film was a profoundly moving experience.
