Disneys animated version of J.M. Barries work is probably the definitive one, at least in the mind of most children.  But I am always interested in the differences between animation and live action, so I was definitely listening when I heard that someone was attempting another live version of Barrie's famous work.  Unfortunately, I didnt really care for this film at all, in spite of a pair of fine performances from the Js (Jason and Jeremy).  But thats not really Hogans fault, because he has easily come up with the most faithful Peter Pan adaptation to date.  What it really points to is my dislike of the source material.  There is something incredibly creepy about the book.  And that translates over into the movie.  A perfect example is how little I like the idea of having Hook and Mr. Darling be the same person.  But its a concept which is essential to the book, I think.  Course, the film had its downsides, too, on the strictly technical level.  It looked like it was nearly all filmed in a sound stage (which it was.)  And the kid acrtors were all pretty unimpressive, especially Wendy.  Mrs. Darling was solid, as was Smee.  And of course there was Jason Isaacs, who is always good.  Tthis performance is no exception; he really hams it up wonderfully.  Jeremy Sumpter was truly inspired casting, as well.  He brings a wonderful physicality to the principle character.  Still, something doesn't really work.  I think that finally, Peter Pan is a freaky little thing.  (I cant really bring myself to call him a kid.)  And so, an excellent adaptation of his story becomes a freaky, unsettling little film.
