| OK. The Coen brothers have me pretty irritated. Miller's Crossing was probably the best gangster movie I've ever seen. A beautifully shot, powerful, dramatic movie. But all the funny stuff I've seen them do is absurd. The Big Lebowski and O Brother were just too much for me. Too strange, too random, and too long. But this film was supposed to be a drama as well. So I was pretty hopeful. And it was brilliant visually, no doubt about that. Shot in black and white, and very, very interesting from a cinematic viewpoint. But it was simply absurd story-wise, although you don't realize that until pretty close to the end. (Although a movie that has 30-45 second shots of a guy cutting hair should probably have warned me earlier.) Now I realize that the Coens are crazy. I'm really starting to worry that Miller's Crossing was a freak accident. But the really frustrating thing about this film was that it was fine until about 15 minutes before the end. There were simply too many twists from there on out. Especially the shot of the hubcap spinning down the road for about 25 seconds. Oh. And also the space saucer. That was pretty unnecessary. What a waste. Come on, boys! Pull yourselves together! You can do better than this! (I'm not completely convinced, I guess. But I'm trying to talk myself into it.) | ||||||
