A very slow moving film.  In fact, speaking bluntly, it is a boring film.  Except for the parts that are filled with pretentious, anti-McCarthyism caricatures.  And those parts, aside from being massively simplistic, are cinematic failures.  They try to sound inclusive, but end up just being preachy.  On the bright side, Carrey is refreshingly serious for the first time I can remember.  (Even his Truman Show performance, often sited as an example of his "serious acting ability," was pretty over-the-top.)  Unfortunately, his facial mannerisms of his are so tied in to bizarre, green comic characters that he can't use them without making you think of either The Mask or The Grinch.  The scene at his father's deathbed is an excellent example of this; it would have been truly moving, if the audience could stop thinking that "Jimmy is using his plastic face again."  Landau's supporting performance is quite excellent, but nearly everyone else is either wooden, two dimensional, or both.  Finally, the film is unable to generate any interest in its long, implausible storyline, and can offer only a few moments of chemistry between Carrey and Landau.  Which is precious little for a 2:30+ movie to offer.
