| This little picture is quite possibly my favorite animated film ever. The friendships that develop between Hogarth, the Iron Giant, and the beatnik are truly priceless, and there is a fair amount of humor sprinkled throughout the film as well. Its antiviolence message is a little over-applied, (I think it's probably alright to go hunting), but the film ultimately delivers a positive message about peace and tolerance without being overly preachy. The scenes where Hogarth discovers and befriends the Giant are wonderful, as is the moment when Dean McCoppin discovers what is really hiding in his junkyard. But for me, the real emotional punch of the movie comes from the good-bye scene between Hogarth and the Giant after they realize that only the Giant can save the town of Rockwell from certain disaster. His decision to sacrifice himself and his very real friendship with Hogarth is a truly touching moment. The animation is splendid, and Vin Diesel, cast as the voice of the Giant himself, is wonderful. The fact that the Giant's voice, which starts out as a very mechanical sound, gradually becomes more human as the story goes on is a magnificent touch. A must see. "Superman!" |
