An enjoyable submarine thriller.  But thats about it.  Is it just me, or does every submarine film since Hunt for Red October look like a poor imitation of John McTiernans masterpiece?  I guess thats the reward you get for doing something groundbreaking.  This film has its own merits, however; mostly because it has been very well cast.  The characters are pretty broadly drawn, but not without interest.  Washington plays the handsome, idealistic good guy, and Hackman plays the tough, cynical guy who isnt really bad, but lets himself get out of control.  No real surprises in the rest of the cast, either, except for Viggo Mortensens portrayal of Weapons Officer Wepps.  There was some real complexity to his character, pretty much the only intricate thing in a film that varied between refreshingly and irritatingly straightforward.  Visually, nothing here that Red October didnt provide in a better package.  Essentially, this is a film where Tony Scott shows why it is that he is less famous that his brother.  He never quite seems to achieve the emotional edge he needs.  One other comment: the Philip Francis Queeg treatment is starting to get a little predictable.  This is the second film Ive seen in 2 weeks that pays strong homage to or rips-off significant portions and plot details from The Caine Mutiny.  Someone needs to try something else.
