| This film is based on the early years of Frank Abangale, Jr., the world's greatest con artist. This time around, Spielberg has compiled an impressive cast of actors, and the three main performers are first-rate. DiCaprio is more than acceptable; he does a fine job of coming across as likeable, despite his character's questionable moral actions. Hanks, in an unusual role for him, is excellent as the obsessed FBI agent hunting DiCaprio down. (His New England accent is priceless.) And Walken is brilliant as DiCaprio's pursued, sorrowful, and ultimately twisted, father. The movie's other actors, however, are workmanlike at best. A random scene with Jennifer Garner seems to be tacked on for its star-power alone. And the movie, with the exception of a confrontation between Hanks and DiCaprio in an airport terminal, is visually drab and uninspiring, especially compared to Spielberg's most recent efforts. But the most damaging point is the story itself. Finally, it is simply too depressing, and a brief text description of the main characters' lives after the conclusion of the movie does nothing to dispel this impression. Spielberg is undeniably great, and this film is certainly covered with the fingerprints of brilliant directing. But he chose the wrong story. | ||||||
