                    Hurricane Season June 1-November 15

What is a Saffir-Simpson scale? How are hurricanes and tropical storms identified? Where are the highest winds located in a hurricane?  What is a hurricane tracking chart and how is it used?
The Saffir-Simpson scale is the scale used to measure the strength of hurricanes. It ranges from a category 1 to a category 5.  A category 1 storm has wind speeds of 74-95 mph. Category 2 has wind speeds of 96-110 mph. A category 3 has wind speeds of 111-130 mph. A category 4 has wind speeds of 131-155. A category 5 has wind speeds greater than 155 mph.
Tropical storms and hurricanes are identified by name. They are named in alphabetical order from A to Z and rotate from male to female or female to male.
The highest winds in a hurricane are located in what is known as the eye wall.  The strongest winds are usually found within the Northeast section of the eye wall. A tracking chart is used to plot the location and direction of a Tropical Storm or a Hurricane. The chart consists of lines of latitude and longitude.
As we all recall, 2005 was a devasting season for Americans.  As we recall, Katrina was the most devasting storm to hit U.S. soil in many years.  What does 2006 have in store for us?  Please stay posted for more details on the 2006 Hurricane season as it unfolds.
