Resume - Joseph Walter
Reasons why I should be manager of the Chicago Cubs:

Pay for performance.  My base salary would cover meals, lodging, travel, etc.  Incentives kick in for every win over 81.  Leaves some salary dollars to acquire additional players if needed.

I would NOT let my 3-year old son on the field during a game.

I am well aware of the history of the franchise.

I do not owe the government any back taxes.  I personally would not want a manager who cannot manage his own finances.

Players would look like a team.  No more half-buttoned shirts.

No unshaven players.  Facial hair is acceptable, but players are representing not only their team, but their city, and their families.  I'm embarrassed for guys making millions of dollars who can't look presentable.

The only batting practice for pitchers is bunting.  There is no reason why pitchers should not be able to advance a runner.  Base hits for pitchers are a bonus, but let's work on the fundamentals first.

Hustle.  My favorite example is from years ago watching Shawon Dunston on the last day of the regular season.  The Cubs and Pirates were both ending dismal seasons.  Dunston popped a ball straight up in the air, and immediately started sprinting.  The ball dropped about 10 feet in front of home plate, and he was standing on second base with a double.  Hustle like that will earn players respect from others and especially from the fans.

The organization needs someone from outside of baseball to bring a fresh perspective to the game.  Managers seem to be recycled.  Putting in their time in the minors or as coaches seems to be all that is required to be a major league manager, but how many managers with that background are successful?

Dusty Baker has one of my favorite quotes about managing.  It's all about 42 games.  Most teams are going to win 60 and lose 60.  It's how you do in those remaining 42 that is important.

A game is a game is a game.  Every game you win in April is one you don't have to win in September.  Too many games are blown in the early season, making games later more important than they should be.
