MAUDLIN was the very first release of any material by me. I had been writing (or attempting to write, whichever way you see it) songs for a while and had already fronted a band called TARNISH for nine months or so, although VERY few of my songs were attempted, let alone performed by that group. A little over a year after TARNISH died, I began recording MAUDLIN with the intention of having it available to friends before I graduated high school. That deadline was met, 'twas a close call really, though the recordings might have been better had they not been so rushed. C'est la vie!

I sang and played all the drums and guitars meself, not so much because I'm a good player (I am most definately not!) as that I was sort of unsure of how to get other players and a bit afraid they might screw it up, not that anyone could screw it up worse than me, but...well, you know what I mean. After all, this was more or less a collection of demos, and intended to be more about the songs than their presentation or the playing. The main reason I did it was that the songs are something I had been working on, and no one else had got to hear 'em yet. And that was the ultimate frustration! I write these songs to be heard, after all. What's the point in writing a song if no one hears it? Also, I felt as though until these songs had been put to use, I couldn't move on to writing more songs.

There are still a lot things that make me cringe when I hear it, and I would change a Lot about it now, but hey! that one-track-at-a-time thing is difficult! The drums were all put on without any guides of any sort, and the guitars were put on while listening to the drums, etc. One of the most difficult things was figuring out how to sync' them up when guitars are playing and drums aren't. And after all the hard work I put into it, I can do nothing but apologize for it! That's right everyone, this here 'essay' is my public apology for MAUDLIN, perhaps the most flawed home recording ever! Hahahaha!

But I was really quite surprised at how well it was received, as well as which songs people seemed to like more. I had always thought of "It's True" as the 'single' and like "All I Need" well, too, but people always mention "Porcelain Doll", which I thought was sort of 'filler', but I guess it is kinda catchy. And I really must thank Donald Davolt, who did lots of button-pushing and actually played guitar into my headphones while I played drums on a song or two. Though he's not on the CD, he did play during the recording sessions! Also, thanks to Conan Gibbs, who provided me with the software used to record it. Still want a copy after reading this?
