The Filibuster Flags of Texas
Known as "The First Republic of Texas Flag" the solid green banner was carried by the forces of the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition (aka the Republican Army of the North) which invaded Texas, then a province of New Spain, in 1812. The army consisted mostly of adventurers, criminals and various disgruntled sections of Texas & U.S. society. After some gains, the republicans brutal execution of Texas royalists turned most public opinion against them and a Spanish army under General Joaquin de Arredondo marched north and brought a bloody end to the attempt to make Texas a republic.
The First Lone Star Flag of Texas on record was designed by the filibuster leader Dr. James Long in 1819 during yet another attempt by elements outside of Texas to seize the province from Spain and either make it a republic or annex it to the United States. Long's invasion force consisted of 300 men, and may have had the support of senior members of the U.S. Army (unofficially of course). However, as the invasion unfolded, Mexico itself became independent from Spain under Emperor Agustin de Iturbide and so it was Mexican troops who crushed this final filibuster invasion of Texas.
The Flag of the Fredonian Rebellion was that used by the members of a filibuster attempt in 1826-1827. It was led by disgruntled former Empresario Hayden Edwards along with the Indian agents John Dunn Hunter and Richard Fields. The red and white symbolized the colors of the Anglo and Indian races joined in Hayden's effort to create the "Republic of Fredonia". The Mexican government quickly crushed the rebellion, aided in fact by other loyal Anglo colonists under Stephen F. Austin.
