The flag of the Viceroyalty of New Spain (which included Texas, Mexico and the southwest US) was based on the Cross of Burgundy, which was widely used by Spanish military units and can still be seen flying in Texas today at some of the missions. |

The Kingdom of Spain, state and war flag after 1785 until Mexico gained independence flew over Texas. Displays in Texas may fly this flag or in many instances the old flag of Leon and Castille, the united kingdoms of Ferdinand and Isabella. |

The Kingdom of France, displaying the lilly flowers, symbolic of the Virgin Mary and purity flew over the expedition of Robert Seur de LaSalle which claimed Texas for King Louis XIV. Although the effort failed, the French invasion did prompt Spain into making a major effort to settle Texas. You won't see the tricolor in Texas, it is always the Catholic flag of the ancien regime that flies down this way! |

The Republic of Mexico, was actually not the first Mexican flag to include Texas, an honor which goes to the flag of Emperor Agustin I who won the independence of what was originally the Empire of Mexico. Stephen F. Austin had begun negotiations to establish Anglo colonies in Texas with the Emperor's government, which soon fell. As a result it was under the Mexican republic that the Anglo colonies were established; a relationship that lasted until 1836. |

The Republic of The Rio Grande, though not exactly a colonial flag, the Republic of the Rio Grande was declared in Laredo, Texas in 1840 and consisted of the Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. This was done in reaction to the policy of centralization being carried out by the regime of General Santa Anna. The country was crushed in less than a year and the leaders fled north to Texas. |
