| The Texas Rangers Throughout our history, the Texas Rangers have stood out as one of the most elite and legendary armed units in the world. First founded in 1823 for Stephen F. Austin's colony the Texas Rangers became the first line of defense for the Republic of Texas after 1836 as the "Corps of Rangers". Men like Jack Hays, Ben McCulloch, Samuel Walker and "Bigfoot" Wallace became legendary for their service with the Texas Rangers fighting Indians, bandits and Mexican incursions. Following annexation the Texas Rangers played a leading role in the Mexican-American War in which the enemy named them "los diablos Tejanos" or "the Texas devils". During the War Between the States they served the Confederacy in battles across the country, particularly "Terry's Texas Rangers" which was hailed as the greatest cavalry regiment of the entire war. In 1874 the Rangers were reorganized as a law enforcement unit and rode to great fame under such leaders as Captain Leander H. McNelly and Major John B. Jones, taking out such infamous outlaws as John Wesley Hardin and "the Robin Hood of Texas" Sam Bass. Today they remain the most elite law enforcement agency in Texas, coming under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Safety in 1935. They are the oldest law enforcement agency with statewide jurisdiction in all of North America. Their cavalry background has often led them to be compared to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It was once said that to be a Texas Ranger one had to ride like a Mexican, trail like an Indian and fight like the very devil. So remember bad guys, "when you're in Texas look behind you, 'cause that's where the Ranger's gonna be". |
