| Q1290 is a continuation of the conversations began on Q1289. Both tapes were made on November 18, 1978. Q1290 contains the voices of Doug Ellice, John Burke, Dennis Reece, Joe Hartmann, and some ham radio operators in Georgetown and Jonestown. Q1290 is of particualr interest because you can hear the codes being given over the ham radio in the background that the children have already begun to be poisoned and that orders were out to settle the score with "temple enemies." A more detailed summry will be available in the future. Please check back for upates. |
| The following is a transcript of cassette tape, Q1290, released by the State Department to Josef Dieckman on 31 December, 2007.
The transcription was completed on 13 February 2008. Q1290 Side 1 (Phone being dialed and rings) Burke: Yup Doug: Sir, a very strange message�uh�seemingly�some sort of encryption. Hold on a second. I�ll call you right back, sir. (Phone being dialed and rings) Burke: Yup Doug: Sir, do you have pencil and paper? Burke: Yah. Doug: I should read this to you but I don�t know what it means. And if there�s any more, I�ll just drop the phone and try to get it, if you don�t mind. Uh�three people were asked to receive this and no one else. And when they were assembled it was, �A lot of people have seen�� Burke: Pardon? Doug: �A lot of people have seen�Mr. Fraser. [pause] I think Mrs. Brownfield�has offered to help.� Burke: �A lot of people have seen Mr. Fraser, [shortwave radio can be heard in the background, largely unintelligible] I think Mrs��[interrupted] Doug: [interrupting] Excuse me, sir. [pause] Mrs. Guillian they�re talking about. Just a second. Shortwave: (female speaker) Um, we do, we do, we do. [pause] But, uh�we, we�re, we�re trying [unintelligible] [long pause, extraneous talking in room] Doug: Sir, [unintelligible] seems to be more to this. Maybe I better call you in another minute or two Burke: Ok. Doug: If you don�t mind. [recording drops, but picks up again] Female: Hello? Unknown male 1: Hello, is Doug there? Female: Yes, just a minute sir. Unknown male 1: Thank you. Doug: Yes, sir. Hello? Unknown male 1: Hello, Doug? Doug: Yes. Unknown male 1: Our latest information is that, um�the uh, they still are on the ground up there. Doug: Ok, good. Thanks a lot. Try to keep me posted. There may be (male 3 interrupts, �Ok�) trouble up there. Unknown male 1: Talk to you later. Doug: There may be some sort of problem up there. [phone hung up] (Phone being dialed and rings) Burke: Yes. Doug: I�ll try again. Uh, �A lot of people have seen Mr. Fraser.� Burke: Yah. Doug: �I think Mrs. Brownfield has offered to help.� Burke: [repeating back] Brownfield has offered to help. Doug: �She�s three��or perhaps it was, �free.� Burke: Three or free. Doug: Right. �Get SB�� or perhaps it was, �FB�to help�.and get all the other folks.� And then there was something about, �Hey, I�ve got an idea, how about Mrs. Guillian?� And they said, �Yah, get her too.� It�It�s some obvious sort of code and it sounds� sounds very very strange. Uh�jus- wh- when these people were standing by to receive this message, they were told to clear the radio room and, uh only have certain personnel there. They called up and said, �Yah we heard�.GDF at Ogle had heard something about a problem at Port Kaituma. So may be something going on up there. Burke: Hmm. Doug: SB could be a �Special Branch�. Mrs. Guillian could be GDF. I don�t know, may- But�I�it�s an obvious encryption. I�m not reading something into it �cuz they�ve been talking in the clear all day. Burke: Yah, yah. Doug: This means something. Burke: OK. Doug: But it seems to be calling for action on this end, because it was upstairs that was calling and they asked for certain parties here to copy the message and no one else so� Burke: Yah. Doug: Maybe they�re planning something for the airport. Burke: Yah. Ok, nothing, uh�I� Doug: We still don�t know who�s coming out though. Burke: Well I tried to get, uh, I tried to get Peter Londono but, uh, that number you gave me at GAC and he wasn�t there. Uh� Doug: He just called me and said he doesn�t know anything except the plane is still on the ground at Port Kaituma. Burke: Oh, it�s still on the ground? Doug: Yes. I�m not sure how� Burke: What he told me was he didn�t have an ETA or anything. Doug: Well, they may be having some sort of a hassle out there at the airstrip. Burke: Yah. Ok. Doug: I�ll continue� Burke: Yah Doug: transcribing this� Burke: Well, if Peter calls again, ask him to call me, hmm? Doug: Ok, I told him to attempt to verify whether or not the plane was in the air and to let me know, but I�ll tell him to call you when he calls me. Burke: [doubling with Doug] Yah, well, have, have him call me. Doug: Will do, sir. [phone hangs up] Doug: Hello?! Dennis: Uh, Doug Ellice, please. Doug: Yah. This is he. Dennis: I�m Dennis Reece Doug: Hi, Dennis. Dennis: I heard a�cryptic message on the radio that sounded like it was for me, I�m not sure. But anyway I called�Sharon Amos�and uh, they�ve had no contact with Jonestown. Doug: Ok. Good. Thank you very much. Dennis: Alright. [�You wanna�??] call me back about the other thing [unintelligible] Doug: Right�uh�Peter thinks the planes may still be on the ground at Kaituma. Dennis: Oh really? Doug: Yah. I�ll uh, I�ll keep you posted as I find out what�s going on. Dennis: Ok. Doug: You might call Sharon periodically and ask her to call up and see whether or not the planes have left. Dennis: Yah. Doug: [unintelligible] they would know inside whether or not the planes had taken off. Why don�t you ask her that? Dennis: No, they haven�t had any contact. Doug: Well, ask her to try to contact them and see whether or not the planes have left on schedule. Dennis: You mean contact Sharon� Doug: hmm� Dennis: here� Doug: Yah, or wait ten minutes and bug her again. But uh, I wanna know�I�d like her to call Jonestown and find out what�s going on. Dennis: Yah, she�s trying to but [long, unintelligible string] generator problem or something and haven�t been able to get radio contact with them. Doug: Yah, except that�s not true. Dennis: Oh, it isn�t? Doug: No. Dennis: Oh, well� [unintelligible] Doug: Ask�ask her if she can find out whether or not the planes have left on schedule. Dennis: Okay. Doug: Thanks a lot. Dennis: Uh-huh. Bye. [phone hangs up] Doug: Hello? Joe: Hi, Doug. Doug: Hi. Joe: Joe Hartmann here. Doug: Hi. Joe: Uh�they haven�t gotten any confirmation on the flight coming in from uh�Fort Kaituma. [sic] Doug: I know. There�s a possibility they�re all still on the ground up there. Joe: Why? Doug: I don�t know. That�s what I�d love to find out. Is there any radio contact from [unintelligible] here to their own plane? [voices coming over the shortwave receiver heard in the background] Shortwave: Ok, I talked to� Doug: �K, I�ll see ya later� Shortwave: I talked to� [unintelligible] Joe: Ok [phone hangs up] Female: Hello. Franklin: Hello? Is, uh, Doug Ellice there? Female: Yes. Who�s calling, please? Franklin: Franklin English. Female: Alright. Just a minute, please. [To Doug off the phone: �Franklin English.� Answer from Doug: �Tell him to call me back in five minutes�] [pause] Female: De-, uh, Frank? Franklin: Yes. Female: Is it urgent? Franklin: Uh�..no��. Female: He�s very busy right now. Uh, can he call you back in five minutes later? Franklin: Ok, ask him to call me when he�s free. Female: Alright�[unintelligible] Franklin: Ok��Bye Female: Will do. [phone hangs up] Female: Hello? Joe: Hi. Is Doug there? Female: Yes. Who�s calling, please? Joe: Joe Hartmann. Female: Alright. Uh, Joe, he said he [unintelligible] �he cant talk right now. Uh�He can�t talk right now. He�s busy on somethin�. Joe: Ok. Female: Uh� Joe: Have him call me back as soon as he can. Female: Well, he want me to take a message [unintelligible] what, uh�what can I, uh, [unintelligible] for you? Joe: Alright. I just�alright. I just found out that, uh, the reason that the planes haven�t taken off� Female: Yah� Joe: Was because it was reported that there�s been some kind of a shooting. Female: Oh no! Joe: Huh? Female: You sure? Joe: I�m just telling you what I heard. Female: Right, right. Because that�s what he�s been busy about. Ok, repeat. It�s some kind of a shooting? Joe: Yes. Female: Ok. Joe: That�s what I heard. Female: Ok, ok�. Joe: But I don�t�I can�t confirm that being true or not. Female: Yes, it could be true because stranger things have gone [unintelligible] here. That�s why he can�t leave the radio�.and�you know�. Joe: Alright, I�m comin� over to your place. Female: Right. Joe: Ok. Bye. Female: Ok. Bye. [phone hangs up] Female: Hello. Jim: Hello. Is Doug there? Female: Who�s calling, please? Jim: Jim Schollaert. Female: Ok, just a minute please. [speaking in the background, unintelligible] Doug: Yah? Jim: Doug? Doug: Yah. Hold on a minute. Jim: �K Doug: Go ahead. Jim: Ok, uh�well. We uh, we were just wondering what�s going on, uh� Doug: There�s some troubles up there. I don�t know what it is. I�ll let you know when I find out. Jim: OK. I suspect the same here from some�some of the behavior [unintelligible] Doug: Yah, uh, you may have some visitors out there at the airport from the group. Jim: Pardon me? Doug: Uh, the group is on the move. (ham radio traffic heard in background) Jim: Uh-huh. Doug: Ok, I-I�ll, I don�t, I have no idea what�s going on yet, but I�m trying to find out. Jim: Right. Doug: Ok. Be cool. Jim: OK�uh, we�ll be here. Doug: Ok, good. Thanks. [sounds of phone being dialed and ringing] Burke: Yah. Doug: Yes, sir. Something bad going on. I don�t know what it is. Joe Hartmann called Ogle and he heard something about the planes haven�t taken off yet because of gunshots. There�s a lot of cryptic traffic going back and forth about uh, having the�having somebody�s children �go meet Mr. Fraser� and �the children don�t have any vehicles to go do it� and �Have you contacted Mr. Brownfield yet?� Wait a minute. [ham radio traffic heard in background] Something [unintelligible] about Mr. Fraser. Are, are you�is your radio on? Burke: I can�t pick it up. There�s too much static. [ham radio traffic heard in background] Shortwave 1: [unintelligible] (female speaker) well�they�re working on it� Doug: They�re working on it. Shortwave 2: (different speaker, but hard to tell which radio female is in Georgetown and which is in Jonestown) Oh, I see�I see. I thought you were...said [unintelligible string] Shortwave 1: Well, they�re on their way to see him. Doug: They�re on their way to see Mr. Fraser. Sounds like they�ve got people going down to the airstrip. Uh, I don�t know that we�re ever going to figure out... Burke: Well, yes. What airstrip are we talking about? Doug: Kaituma. Uh, I don�t know that listening to this, we- we�ll ever figure out what they�re talking about, but there�s trouble up there. Burke: Well, I don�t think that�s gonna� really help us very much, Doug, one way or the other. Uh�see if we keep monitoring if there�s anything from it. Uh, I think the thing to do is to just keep pressing GAC and, uh, the other people for an ETA. Doug: Ok, fine�uh� Shortwave 2: Brownfield! Brownfield! Doug: Ok, fine ah, well, I�ll call the airport again. Burke: Yah. Doug: Ok. Thank you. [phone hangs up] Female: Hello? Dan: Hello. Is Mr. Ellice in? Female: Yes. Who is calling, please? Dan: This is Dan Weber. Female: Alright, Dan. Uh�what can I take a message from you? Dan: Uh, yes. I�m, um�in the consulate and� Female: Ok, hold on a minute. Here�s Joe wants to talk to you. Joe: Hi, Dan. Dan: Hi. Joe: What�s up? Dan: Um�I�m in the consulate now. Are things still going, uh�should I still be, wait here? Joe: Yah, just stand by and, and wait for further instructions, alright? Dan: Ok. Fine. Just thought I�d check. Joe: Bye bye. Dan: Bye. Joe: OK. [phone being dialed, unintelligible voices in background] [more dialing, beeps, several minutes of noise similar to off-frequency shortwave reception] What follows is several minutes of personal phone traffic unrelated to the events of November 18, 1978.
