The Black and White Books
I bought the white book back in 1987 at the Aaron Brother's store in Montclair, California, back then located on the corner of Arrow Hwy and Central Avenue, near the Montclair Plaza. It travelled with me on my first trip to France in '87/88 and I used it to store finished works. At the end of 1990 I returned to France and met up with a friend whom I had met at Insa in '87. Talking, he mentioned a projet of his which consisted of travelling to Africa (Mali) and drawing his impressions of the place as he went along. I liked the idea and thought that it would fun to do something similar. It wasn't until 1994 though, when my white book reached its storing usefulness that I decided to record events o my life and places that I visited on it. That's how this collection started. The white book got finished in '99 with drawing no. 95. I then headed to the Aaron Brother's store on the corner of Newport Blvd and 17th Street in Costa Mesa looking for another...they only had black ones. I bought one and soonly after moved to Italy, then France, where I continue increasing the collection which, as of May 2007, is up to 165. These works are small, the largest measuring no more than 11x14 inches. They have been painted with oil pastels and watercolors, mostly "on the spot", and are very intimate. Like the detail of Vernazza above, the majority are impressionistic and representational but some, however, are 'abstract'. Over the years I've managed to produce about 1 per month on average. At this rate, I should finish the black book sometime around the end of 2008.... |
