Blooper Ben Davis |

Respect. It's a part of baseball, has been since the beginning of the game. There are many unwritten rules. You don't run up the score on the losing team in a blowout game. You don?t show up the pitcher while you round the bases after a homer. You don't do things like that if you know what?s good for you. Nobody likes a wise ass. Ben Davis is MLB's wise ass. Remember in High School there was always the kid who talked back to the teacher, made obscene gestures when her back was turned? Davis has become that guy in the NL West. |

| In the 8th inning of the Padres ? D-backs game, Ben Davis showed a total disrespect for one of baseballs greatest pitchers. In his third at bat Davis bunted a weak blooper that got past the mound and out of Jay bell?s reach. Yeah it was weak, it showed that Davis was desperate and was trying to be "the man" and show the 49,300 in attendance that he could beat this guy with something totally unexpected. It worked, only 5 outs away from the 15th perfect game in baseball history, Ben Davis reached first. |

Padre fans will argue that because it was a close game (2-0) Davis? bunt was not uncalled for. Every Padre was trying to get on base like a man, swinging. Why did Davis have to resort to a lame spineless tactic? Davis, a catcher, should know that you earn your way on in the later innings when facing a dominant pitcher. In a sense, Davis did show what he?s made of. It took a lot of guts. But Davis may regret his bunt single for years to come. Retaliation is also a part of baseball. |

I read your article on the Geocities site you have, and I think you are way out of it. Ben Davis and the entire Padre team aren't supposed to drop everything just to let Curt get a Perfect Game. Curt is supposed to earn it, and it should have nothing to do with batters on the other team assisting him in the process of the perfect game. The bunt was smart, because it was unexpected, and it worked. Its baseball, respect the game as it is. I actually have a D-back fan buddy who agrees with me. Curt pitched a great game, but by all means, the other team isn't supposed to drop everything and let Curt get the perfect game. Just accept that Curt is a great pitcher, already a hall-of-famer, and pitched one helluva a game last night. |
