Snakes Rally to Beat Hoffman, Pads. |
| It looked bleak in the top of the 9th inning for the Diamondbacks. Facing Trevor Hoffman, one of the best closers in the game, the Diamondbacks were headed for a split of the 4 game series. Erubiel Durazo struck first with a two-run blast scoring former Padre Steve Finley. David Dellucci kept the rally going by obtaining his third hit of the night, a single. Another former Padre came back to haunt as Reggie Sanders hit his 15th homerun of the season to make it 6-4 in favor of the visiting Diamondbacks. Reggie had only 11 homers last year with the Braves. Erubiel Durazo's blast was his 6th of the season, but all of his previous round-trippers were of the pinch-hit variety. |

Woody Williams was in line for his fifth straight decision and was cruising in the 7th. He had given up only a double to jay Bell to break up a no-hitter 2 outs into that inning when David Dellucci stroked one over the left field wall. That tied the game and Brenly brought out side-armer Byun Hyun Kim to relieve Brian Anderson. In a display that answered everyone's question as to why Kim isn't the closer, the young Korean gave up a double and 3 walks to walk in a run. Greg Swindell stopped the bleeding for the 1st place team. |

Bret Prinz showed everyone why he is the closer until Mantei returns. |

| He pitched a perfect 9th with one strike out, throwing 15 pitches 9 for strikes en route to his 4th save. Prinz has appeared in 13 games, 12 1/3 innings and has not given up a run. |

To this Arizona fan's disappointment, Ben Davis did not start the game. He did however pinch hit in the 8th and was walked by Kim. The Padres left twelve men on base, "They should have bunted more people over," said Luis Gonzalez, "We beat them with the long ball." A day after Ben Davis controversial bunt broke up Curt Schillings perfect game, the Diamondbacks showed the 34,000 in attendance what Bob Brenly was talking about when he said "You earn your way on." |
