EARTH DAY PROJECT
On April 19th, 2003, Josai Volunteer Club members and the JRC (Japan Red Cross) worked together to help clean up city streets and promote environmental awareness for the 2003 Earth Day Celebration in Ota city, Gunma-ken, Japan.
Emilie McGlone and the JVC volunteers met at 8:45 AM to start a "Trash walk" from a local junior high school to a City Park. Along the way, students and community volunteers worked together to pick up trash alongside the roads and help clean up the city streets. Upon reaching the city park, the trash was disposed of by community leaders.

INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING. . .
The week before Earth Day, Josai Volunteer students worked together to draw a map of the world, labeling continents and large bodies of water.  The map was used at Earth Day to encourage international understanding and help students from different schools get to know each other. All community volunteers were encouraged to sign their name on the map, either in Japanese or Romaji.

At the end of the day, the map boasted various signatures from girl scouts, elementary students, adult volunteers, junior high school students and ALTs. The map is now hanging in Josai Junior High school, where students can continue to sign their name on the map. The map signing activity was also great social time for all of the volunteers at Earth Day, allowing them to read each others' names and talk about the "Trash walk" that took place in the morning.
