Walk This Way

Don't underestimate the value of sidewalks and pathways in your garden.  They direct foot traffic, and they direct the eye as well.  Worn patio stones surrounded by creeping thyme or moss invite visitors to find out what lies ahead.  A well-placed sidewalk makes an easy edging for a large border and keeps people from trampling your grass.  A shady lane calls the worn and weary to a garden bench.  Folks travel the paths you've created and see what you want them to see.
There are many materials available for walkways.  Wood chips or gravel provide a renewable surface, but if elegance is your style and your pocketbook allows, you may choose to go with intricately patterned tiles or brick pavers.
Use paths to lay out an herb garden, create a barrier for invasive plants, or direct the kids towards an outdoor faucet.  Rustic or refined, softly curving or prim and straight, walkways are another tool that will help you design a garden that reflects your personal style.
