Practical Small Gardening is an excellent resource for garden design as well as container gardening, planting schemes, practical gardening, and giving you ideas about how to create the garden structure.  The excellent photographs show in beautiful detail an abundance of garden plans.  The book is full of ideas for how to make your garden healthier and more attractive, and how to plan a garden that's just right for your site.
Step by step you are taken through the basics of design, deciding on priorites in the garden, surveying and measuring, and getting your plan on paper.  The section on finishing touches, final design, and preparing a planting plan get your ideas off the drawing board and into the garden.
Would you love to block the view of an unsightly shed?  Want to disguise a compost pile?  Is there a vista you want to emphasize?  There's a special section on screens and disguises that will be most helpful.  You can change the view, create a focal point, and use outdoor furniture to your advantage.
The section on flower and shrub borders is chock full of good ideas and photos that will help you choose your garden style.  Pick plants that suit your soil from the handy guide at the back of the book.
This is an excellent, and very thorough gardening book.  I recommend you read it soon!
