The oldest of the world's international grounds, Lansdowne Road has hosted
Ireland matches since 1878, before the first international championships.
Several internationals have been played at Belfast and Cork, and Lansdowne Road became the regular home after 1951.
But the 55,000-capacity stadium in Dublin is on its last legs, so Irish rugby union and football chiefs have called on the government to pay two-thirds of the cost of a �175million project to redevelop the ground into a modern, 50,000 all-seater stadium.
Dublin already has an impressive, 80,000 capacity stadium in Croke Park, the home of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), the governing body for hurling and Gaelic football.
But the GAA does not allow non-GAA sports to be played at its showpiece venue.
