"Los Vargas, de Toledo, tomaron el primer apellido del se�or�o del lugar de Vargas, que est� en el distrito de aquella ciudad, en la cual nacieron Garc� P�rez de Vargas y Diego P�rez de Vargas, hermanos, por los a�os de 1200, y en el de 1232 acompa�aron, de orden del Rey don Fernando III "el santo", a su hijo el Infante don Alonso y a su Ayo Alvar P�rez de Castro, el castellano, a correr la tierra de moros, y llegaron a la ciudad de And�jar, ganaron a Palma y pasaron a Jerez de la Frontera; y antes de entrar en peligrosa batalla que all� se gan�, fue armado caballero Garc� P�rez de Vargas, y en desempe�o de su obligaci�n di� por su mano muerte en el rigor de la pelea al Rey moro de los Gazules, y ah� fue donde falt�ndole a Diego P�rez de Vargas la lanza y espada por hab�rselas quebrado en los enemigos, no tenido con que pelear, desgaj� de una oliva un ramo con su cepej�n y sirvi�ndole de arma her�a y destrozaba los contrarios con muerte de uno en cada golpe, y aplaudido de don Alvar P�rez de Castro, le dec�a: Asi Diego, Machuca, Machuca, por lo cual se le llamo Diego P�rez de Vargas Machuca, de donde le qued� este apellido, poniendo por timbre de su escudo de armas (que son cuatro ondas de aguas azules en campo de plata) un brazo con cepej�n, y as� las usan con el alcu�o sus descendientes. "

Gaspar Cisneros Betancourt departiendo con Antonio Abad Iznaga en Nueva York sobre las victorias de Bol�var, surge la idea de viajar a su encuentro y pedirle su cooperaci�n en la liberaci�n de Cuba._El 23 de Octubre de 1823 zarp� del pueblo newyorkino la goleta Midas con destino a La Guaira, en Venezuela. A bordo iba una comisi�n integrada por Gaspar, Jos� Antonio Miralla, Jos� Aniceto Iznaga y Fructuoso del Castillo, con el objetivo de encontrar a Bol�var, a su arribo recibieron ayudas, que junto a otras gestiones en Estados Unidos encaminaron sus prop�sitos.
