The eastern box turtle was once a fairly abundant animal in the wild. Now due to being run over and their territory being built on their are few left in the wild. Newborn eastern box turtles are more carnivorous than the adults. Kentucky has some of the brightest marked specimens. Food: earthworms, crickets, flies, grasshoppers, spiders, carrion, pillbugs and other insects. Adults sometimes eat fruit and veggies. The carapace of hatchlings is round and brown. Average life span in the wild: 35 years Average life span in captivity: 77 years Range: Southern Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Eastern Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Eastern Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Eastern Indiana, and Michigan. Reproduction: 2 to 3 clutches. 4 to 6 eggs per clutch Sexing: Males usually have concave plastron and red eyes and tales shorter and stubbier.
