Welly rings - those red rub marks that you get around your legs from wearing your rubber boots. Now dont tell me you never get them. If you havent then it means you dont wear your boots enough.

I used to blame cheap wellies if I suffered especially when the tops were turned down. Yet it didnt stop me wearing the tops turned down as I saw the red marks as a sign of my superiority over the boots. It was as if I was having to break in the boots, like training a horse, to show who is in-charge. I have had blood running down my legs from the constant rubbing but I was determined to prove my strength and that no rubber boot was going to get the better of me. Now I tend to wear a better class of boot and have not suffered welly rings for a number of years. Until this year
Over Christmas I went walking in the Peak District near Manchester with my partner. I decided to wear my Bullseyes. We planned to walk 40 miles over 5 days and I wondered how my boots and my feet would stand up to the distance.

On the first day I managed to find plenty of mud to walk in during our 7 mile walk. At one point we walked alongside a small stream so, naturally, I walked in the water. The freezing cold water on the outside of my boots was refreshing and relaxing on my warm feet inside my boots. After we had finished my feet and legs felt great and the smell from my boots when I removed them was quite intoxicating.

Next day the weather was colder with the ground frozen but it did not stop me wearing my boots even though I prefer soft muddy ground and I still enjoyed the 8 miles of walking. Day three was a 9 mile walk but this time the weather was warmer, meaning soft, muddy ground. My partner said that I was behaving like a young child whenever we came to any mud or water. I probably was but why shouldnt I enjoy myself?

When we had finished the third walk, 24 miles in three days, my feet felt really comfortable but I noticed a slight red marking on the back of my legs. I was surprised and disappointed to get rub marks from Bullseyes. I felt no pain and had felt nothing during our walk.
My Bullseyes were back on my feet for the fourth day which turned out to be the only wet day. An 8 mile walk along muddy paths with pools of water was just what I wanted and Im sure that I had a smile on my face for the entire walk. My feet were still feeling fine despite having walked 32 miles now in four days. I do a lot of walking and am careful about what I wear on my feet as Ive suffered with blisters in the past from poor footwear. Before the 5 days of walking I had wondered at the sense in wearing wellington boots for walking such a distance but I knew that I just had to give it a try.

As it turned out I found the Bullseyes really comfortable. Ive worn far worse walking boots in the past. In fact I dont think Ive worn a more comfortable walking boot that the Bullseyes, except for the rub marks on my legs. The marks were redder than after day three but were still not sore. The red marks had grown in size from the previous day and now there were TWO marks on EACH leg. One at about 22 cms from the floor and the other at 33 cms. The top mark was obviously from the top of my boot but what was causing the lower mark? I looked at my boots and nothing was obvious and even now I have no idea what caused the rubbing.
