Bullseyes & Cords !!

I have liked black rubber boots for as long as I remember and I found that going to country schools I came across lads from farming areas who went in wellingtons & thick brown or green corduroys. I used to make friends & sit next to them & found some loved being in wellingtons & cords.

I found the wearing of rubber boots opened a load of adventures which were not possible before. I recollect my walk to school was across a field & there was also a small stream. On the way home in rubber boots it was great to paddle in the stream wearing rubber boots & an older boy with a larger size could go in when the water level was higher.

After those early shiny wellingtons I had a few years till my teens without any except for when I helped a dairyman neighbour and I was lent a pair of proper mens hefty mucky wellingtons.

I was also excited by seeing farmers & farm workers in hefty black rubber boots tucked into thick corduroys on a sunny day.   As a teenager I found a country farm lad who always came out in hefty wellingtons & cords who went cycle rides going through all the puddles possible. When we had a rest we would sometimes start wrestling & both being in cords & Wellingtons it turned me on.
I think I was in my teens when I tried turning over the tops of my wellingtons & also found the great look those sea boot socks created when they were turned over.  Before going to college I had to spend a year at a secondary school & I got to know a lad who always went in wellington boots. I do not know what happened to his parents but he lived with grandparents & he said he had to keep his feet dry.

I used to think it was great being able to go in them every day but there were several lads there who wore wellingtons as soon as it was rainy or bad weather.

Later where I worked a lad came to work on a motor bike always wearing  hefty Bullseye wellington boots. I got friendly & even bought a leather jacket the same as his as I thought it looked nice with jeans & rubber boots. This soon led to being accepted by a small group who went around like that mainly to racing & motor bike events. In the wet weather I sometimes took them in my car but they usually came or brought a pair of black rubber boots as they were essential equipment.
When we moved to Lincolnshire we were right out in the country as my dad was a Waterworks Engineer. I had to commute over 12 miles to Boston to work & had to cycle a mile & a half to the bus. This meant quite a lot of the time a pair of wellingtons were needed so I bought a pair of Dunlop Solent which were very like Bullseyes. I still have a pair which are still OK. In the country area wellingtons were worn extensively then & we actually lived at a reservoir where guys came fishing. My old jeans tended to vanish as they were given to guys who fell asleep & fell in the water

I did National Service at Liverpool being at a camp at Fazakerly & working in the City. After week-end break I used to travel back on an anglers special Sunday train which ran as far as Sheffield. This train picked up at local station now closed. This train ran from mid June till Christmas & the line from Lincoln to Boston had stations all beside the river.  Nearly all the guys wore black rubber boots or thigh waders & I really liked that train.
I also have a pair of Bullseye thigh boots which turn down nicely for walking but can soon be turned up for water or muddy places. When I bought them they were about 12 so have had them some time. They were popular with the Agricultural workers is this area as well as the full thigh ones which are still worn by some.

I have always lived in or near country & lived next door to dairyman for some time & he wore Bullseyes & corduroys all year round. I found the combination of Bullseyes & cords was ideal. I got a job with a Tractor Dealers & Ironmongers and I came across Bullseyes & started to buy them having a pair at home & a pair always in the car ready for any wearing opportunity.

I found being in the rubber boots gave me an excitement & the ability to go through mud & dirt which would wash off later. Later I found I looked for events suitable for rubber boot wearing which I still do now.  One of my other hobbies is Country/Western music but not the sentimental stuff. I like the rockier/cowboy type & mainly go to Summer week-end festivals. By doing this I have found people go dressed the part with hats & boots etc. & this has given me great confidence to not worry what people think. Some of them go a bit over the top for me but now I can often wear my rubber boots & not care if any one else is wearing them.

Within two miles of where I live there is a Tractor dealer who has a full range of Bullseye knee wellingtons but I was interested to see size 6 & 7 were older design with a round adhesive label with the lettering "Hood Bullseye" in a bordered circle. I think the label was green but they were at the back of the store so light was not ideal. Also had range of Argyll wellingtons. Went in another Tractor Dealers & a farmer went in just ahead of me in his Bullseyes which was nice to see. That dealer just had green which was no good.

At the end of the day I had found there are four Bullseye stockists within 5 miles of me & two of them also sell the full thigh waders. I have several pairs of corduroys from Cudworth of Norden which are terrific value & so tough & nice. They even have corduroy lined pocket
