More Welly Rings
On an earlier page I wrote about welly rings. These were ring marks that I got across the back of my legs after walking whilst wearing my rubber boots/Wellingtons everyday during a weeks holiday. Several people contacted me to tell how they had never heard of or seen welly rings.
Forty years ago when I was a little lad wearing wellies, as did most of my friends, it was common to see red marks across the backs of legs caused by the tops of your boots. This was because we usually wore short trousers and as our socks always seemed to slip down around our ankles, no matter how often we pulled them up, the backs of our legs had no protection from the tops of our boots rubbing against them. Most of us wore our boots nearly every time we played out in the street, especially in the winter or when raining. We only had one good pair of shoes and only wore them when going somewhere special. Sandals, with their open toes, were usually worn on summer days when it was dry. With so much boot wearing the tell-tale red rings around the back of the legs were very common. It was only the posh boys, who wore shoes most of the time, who never had rings.
This year I have been away for another winter holiday and again wore my boots everyday whilst out walking. We walked between 7 & 10 miles every day across open country or alongside rivers. I never once felt my boots rubbing against my legs whilst walking but I noticed after three days red marks starting to appear on the back of my legs. Most of the time I was wearing corduroy trousers which give the legs good protection but the marks where there.
This picture was taken three days after we returned from the holiday. I had walked about 40 miles over six days wearing my boots. After two weeks the rings were still faintly visible and it was three weeks before they had disappeared completely.
Am I the only person who has experienced welly rings? Please let me know if youve had welly rings at any time or am I going mad?? There are two sets of rings caused by my wearing rubber boots whilst walking. I wore Bullseye rubber boots, which are a good quality boot, and they fitted my feet well as I had no other problem with the walking. I dont consider my legs to be fat as my overall weight is 75 kilos / 12 stone and I am 183 cms / 6 feet tall. Contact me at [email protected] and let me know what you think about welly rings

Thought I would add to the welly ring discussion. I was brought up on a dairy farm, therefore welly wearing was an all day, everyday activity. My brothers being darker haired than me always had welly rings around their legs. Hair stopped growing after a while. Farming lads at school would compare legs during changing for PE. I loved that and encouraged the conversation. As a member of a young farmers club, it was easy to spot the welly wearers at sporting or swimming events because of the bare ring around the legs. One guy was very hairy anyway, it looked like he was wearing socks the line was so distinct. Some lads would talk about it, it was decided that Nora wellies were the worst as they slightly a tighter fit and not lined like bullseyes or Argylls are. The tops of Noras are sharper. The only way it get rid of them was to turn the wellies down. Most of us didn't like that because only granddads had turned down wellies |
