Seeing what Bessie shows from a psychological perspective, it could be analyze taking in mind Sigmund Freud beliefs, specially with the concept of anxiety. According to
Encarta the concept of anxiety "institutes appropriate mechanisms of defense against certain dangers. Theses dangers situations, as described by Freud, are the fear of abandonment by or the loss of the loved one(the object), the risk of losing the object's love, the danger of retaliation and punishment, and, finally the hazard of reproach superego" (Encarta, Psychoanalysis, par. 12). The characters needed to defend from the drought that can be considered as a danger of "retaliation and punishment". The resolution of the sacrifice of the girls in the rain ceremony in the story can be seen as a defense mechanism cause by the anxiety of the characters.
