| a note on creativity: some years ago, when I was at a quilt show in Western Washington, I was stunned by some beautiful quilts made by a woman whose work has been featured in quilt art magazines. I wish I could remember her name. At any rate, I told her I could never be that creative and she said, "Oh, yes you can! Just do it!" what I meant was it would never have occurred to me to create quilts the way she creates them. She has a very unique style. What she meant was "all humans have the potential to create beauty in the world. You just have to give yourself permission to try, experiment, and take a risk. Even mistakes can be beautiful." when she told me, "Just do it!" she said it with a big happy smile, as if she knew that one day I would actually start doing so. This was very differernt from a college classmate of mine who told me the same thing but with an irritated tone of voice. That was intimidating for me. at any rate, even if everyone learns the same creative techniques, no two individuals are going to create exactly the same thing and that is what makes creative life so interesting, right? |
