EXTRA! EXTRA! Learn all about it!

The directions: build the tallest free-standing structure using only newspaper and masking tape - all newspaper used must be tightly rolled up into tubes.

This was our first "rainy day" activity where the students were given the opportunity to think creatively and cooperatively to build the tallest structure. It was only AFTER we had completed this activity that I noticed most of the groups had used the same base style - a triangular shape. The students have been exposed to tripods (the stand on which the camcorder sits) in class because I have been video-taping a few lessons. The students utilized their prior knowledge of tripods and imitated this structure to build their newspaper tower. They were not instructed in any way on how to build their tower, but most made the connection between the triangular shape and building a stable tower.
