How to Survive in Rock
Electricity.
Useful stuff, it drives guitars, amps, synths and recording gear - it will also try and kill you if it gets the chance. DON'T LET IT - I want to see you on the box, not in one. Get mains plugs wired by someone who knows what they're doing, get dodgy gear fixed professionally before you use it, and ALWAYS use a circuit breaker with an amplifier - at home or school. If something goes wrong, it cuts the power. Is your life worth ten quid? Then buy a circuit breaker
Ears.
Your ears are designed to be incredibly sensitive, and amplified music produces sharp sound peaks far greater than your ears can cope with - breaking the microscopic filaments in your inner ear which actually detect sounds. These do not regrow. Ever come out of a loud concert or club with ringing in your ears? Your hearing is being damaged. In the old days rock musicians didn't bother about their ears. Now they are deaf. Good hearing is a musicians most important posession, and nowadays professionals safeguard it by wearing hearing protection every time they play in a band or go to a gig or club. As a rule, if you have to shout into someone elses ear to be heard above the noise, then you need protection. I recommend the Foam Earplugs available from Boots - they are cheap, effective, and invisible. At first it feels funny - but give it ten minutes and you will forget they're there - you can still hear and speak, it's just that everything is quieter, and you can hear the music more clearly too! Many people do not take this seriously until it's too late and the damage has been done - THIS IS SERIOUS - I have met many rock musicians who have permanent hearing damage and desperately wish that they had been warned earlier. Luckily, you have been - so get some earplugs, wear them a few times to get used to them, then use them. Now, where's my hearing aid...
Drugs
Forget it. Drugs are for morons
