The value of a forum depends upon the discussion topic and the interest the participants that visit the site have in the topic. A forum that is valueable to one person may not interest another.
I do not think that forum value is dependant upon subject area, rather it is dependent upon visitor participation and interest.
It is beneficial, when considering
