Class Rules and Expectations - GATE BIOLOGY

Materials
The following
items must be brought to class on a daily basis:
3-ring binder for Biology only pencils paper (lined, plain and
graph paper)
pens (blue or black only) colored
pencils non-programable
scientific calculator
Behavior
ALL SCHOOL RULES WILL BE FOLLOWED.
This includes the DRESS CODE and NO FOOD OR DRINKS
· BE ON TIME.

detention will be assigned for the
first four tardies. At the fifth
tardy detention a referral will be made to the vice principal. A tardy is defined as a student not sitting
in his/her SEAT or assigned workstation when the tardy bell rings. If you are late - come in quietly. Take the Detention Form from the desk and
fill it out at your seat. Return the
list to the teacher when it will not be an interruption.

CLASS TO BEGIN WHEN THE
Have the materials listed above ready at
your desk.
Have all homework and assignments that are
due stapled and correctly headed before coming to class.
· WORK SAFELY IN
THE LAB. Safe behavior and
procedures in the lab are described in the safety rules (see below)
·
Cheating will not be tolerated. If you cheat, you will receive a failing
grade (zero) on the assignment and I will schedule a conference with your
parents. Cheating includes helping
someone to cheat (giving answers or papers to copy INCLUDING LABORATORY REPORTS
DONE BY LAB PARTNERS). Continued
cheating may result in a note in your school records and referral to the
vice-principal.
Infraction
of the above rules will be dealt with by student-teacher conference, call to
parent, detention or referral depending upon the infraction.
Hall Passes
·
Students are expected to use the restrooms, telephones and
drinking fountains during the passing time. Therefore, hall passes will not be
issued for these activities.
Course work
· All assignments
should be properly headed, organized and neatly written. Sentences and paragraphs are to be used at
all times. The heading belongs in the
upper right hand corner of the page and should contain in the following
order:
first & last name
date
per
The assignment
title should be centered on the top line of the page.
Assignments
with incorrect headings will receive 0 points.

An assignment notebook must be kept in a 3-ring
binder. The notebook includes all graded assignments with correct titles and
arranged in the order designated on the board.
Materials for each chapter, including class notes, reading notes, and
handouts organized by unit.

Each student will keep a portfolio in the
classroom. Selected assignments and
essays will be a part of the portfolio.
·
Lab grades will be based on the completed lab
reports and participation points will be given on random assignments. If lab preps assigned as homework are not
complete before entering the classroom the student will not be allowed to do
the lab during the class period and will be given an alternate assignment.
·
Homework will be assigned on a regular
basis. It is the responsibility of the
student to check the assignment calendar for assignment due dates. Homework is due at the BEGINNING OF CLASS and will be marked late if not turned in
promptly. Homework due on the day of a single
period absence or a partial day absence should be turned in to me or
in my box in the main office before 4:00 PM in order to receive full
credit. Unannounced quizzes over
homework will be given.

Exams and quizzes will be given on a regular basis. Exams will be announced but quizzes may be
unannounced. Makeup exams may be vary in
form from the original but will cover the same content.
Grades
·
Grades are based on the percentage of the total points
earned.
The following scale will be used:
A= 90.0% - 100%
C= 65.0% - 79.9%
D= 55.0% - 64.9%
F=
0.0% - 54.9%
Any student with
7 unexcused absences in a semester will receive a grade of F/A for the class no
matter what percentage of points has been earned.

Late work is penalized 50% and only accepted for
one day from the due date.
·
Work from absences (if excused within 5 days) that is
assigned during an absence must be completed within the same number of days you
were absent plus one day, beginning with the day of your return. Work assigned three days prior to an absence
is due on the day you return. It is
responsibility of the student to obtain makeup work and make arrangements to
complete labs following an absence.
·
Lab work must be made up in person; it is not
acceptable to copy data from another student.
·
If an absence is
unexcused work should made up and will receive no credit.
Seven unexcused absences in a semester will result in an F/A grade.
Help
I am available for help and makeup work most lunch hours and after school until 3:45 (if students are present).
LABORATORY SAFETY RULES
1. Carefully
read and follow the instructions for each activity found in your books or
handouts. LISTEN CAREFULLY as the procedures are demonstrated and explained
by the teacher before each exercise. Do
not begin or continue any work in the lab unless you are prepared.
2.
Work only in the area assigned by the teacher: stay in your work area
unless additional materials are needed.
Please send one team member to obtain materials to avoid congestion.
3.
Horseplay, fighting, crowding, pushing, running, teasing and such
activities have no place in this classroom or laboratory. They will not be tolerated! ! !
4. If
you doubt the safety of your lab set-up or equipment for any investigation
check with your teacher before going ahead.
5.
All books, papers, clothing and other flammable materials should be kept
away from open flames.
6.
Those students with long hair must tie it back when working with an open
flame. Pipe cleaners, rubber bands and
string are useful for this purpose.
7. If
you should accidentally catch a part of your clothing on fire, yell for help
and try to smother the fire with a blanket or nearest available coat,
etc. DON'T RUN!
8. Do
not mix chemicals or perform any experiments that have not been specifically
assigned by the teacher.
9. REPORT ALL PROBLEMS OR INJURIES TO YOUR
TEACHER AT ONCE, NO MATTER HOW SMALL.
10. Never use chemicals from an UNLABELED container. Please notify the teacher of any unlabeled
chemicals immediately.
11. Be sure the floor around your work area is
dry at all times.
12. Keep your work area clean from spilled
chemicals at all times and carefully wash the table tops at the end of each
exercise.
13. Keep tweezers, scissors, water or any other
objects or liquids away from electrical outlets.
14. NEVER go barefoot in the laboratory or
classroom.
15. SAFETY GOGGLES MUST BE WORN DURING ALL
EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING HEATING, HAMMERING, OR USING ACIDS, BASES OR OTHER
POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS. The teacher
and/or the lab instructions will identify these. If you do not have goggles you may not be n
the work area!
16. Be very careful when handling and/or heating
any glassware to avoid cutting or burning yourself. Proper procedures will be demonstrated and
must be followed. Report all broken
and/or chipped glass to the teacher immediately to be cleaned up or removed
from circulation.
17. Point the open end of a test tube or flask
away from yourself and others while heating.
NEVER HEAT IN A CLOSED CONTAINER.
Never heat anything unless specifically instructed to do so.
18. If you spill chemicals on yourself, wash
them off with water very thoroughly AT ONCE and notify the teacher. If chemicals get in your eyes immediately
begin flushing with the EYE WASH in the front of the room next to the exit
door.
19. Use squeeze bottles, medicine droppers,
pipettes and the like only for their intended purposes. NEVER THROW OR SQUIRT ANYTHING IN THE LAB.
20. Never handle animals in the laboratory
unless directed to do so by the teacher.
Never insert your fingers or objects into the cages or aquaria to poke,
pet or feed animals.
21. Notify the teacher at once if an animal bites
you.
22. Never bring poisonous plants or animals to
school.
Infraction of these rules or any interference with laboratory safety will result in immediate removal and a failing grade.

for study therefore
a. No email
b. No chat rooms
c. No games
d. No downloads
e. No installation
of programs
f.
No personal diskettes – Files may be transferred to home
using an online storage account.
3. All computers must be shut
down on command.
Failure to follow these rules will result in loss of computer
privileges. All assignments must still
be worked on and completed as scheduled using other means.
