READING AND RECORDING DATA FROM LABORATORY INSTRUMENTS

When collecting data from laboratory equipment read and record all numbers that are certain and estimate one number unless the teacher gives special instructions for specific instruments.

Using a ruler:

Ruler a has measurements marked in .1 meter increments.  Therefore when it is read .1 meters is certain and the hundredths should be estimated.  The measurement should be read and recorded as .15 meters.  The last number is estimated so some people might read and record this measurement as .14 meters.   (Notice that both measurements include units)

Using a graduated cylindar:

Always read the bottom of the meniscus.
