LABORATORY SAFETY RULES

 1.   Carefully read and follow the instructions for each activity found in your books or handouts.  LISTEN CAREFULLY as the procedures are demonstrated and explained by the teacher before each exercise.  Do not begin or continue any work in the lab unless you are prepared.

  2.  Work only in the area assigned by the teacher:  stay in your work area unless Additional materials are needed.  Please send one team member to obtain materials to avoid congestion.

  3.   Horseplay, fighting, crowding, pushing, running, teasing and such   activities have no place in this classroom or laboratory.  They will not be tolerated! ! !

  4.   If you doubt the safety of your lab set-up or equipment for any investigation check with your teacher before going ahead.

  5.   All books, papers, clothing and other flammable materials should be kept away from open flames.

  6.   Those students with long hair must tie it back when working with an open flame.  Pipe cleaners, rubber bands and string are useful for this purpose.

  7.   If you should accidentally catch a part of your clothing on fire, yell for help and try to smother the fire with a blanket or nearest available coat, etc.  DON'T RUN!

  8.   Do not mix chemicals or perform any experiments that have not been specifically assigned by the teacher.

    9.   REPORT ALL PROBLEMS OR INJURIES TO YOUR TEACHER AT ONCE, NO MATTER HOW SMALL

10.   Never use chemicals from an UNLABELED container.  Please notify the teacher of any unlabeled chemicals immediately.

11.   Be sure the floor around your work area is dry at all times.

12.   Keep your work area clean from spilled chemicals at all times and carefully wash the table tops at the end of each exercise.

13.   Keep tweezers, scissors, water or any other objects or liquids away from electrical outlets.

14.    NEVER go barefoot in the laboratory or classroom.

15.    SAFETY GOGGLES MUST BE WORN DURING ALL EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING HEATING, HAMMERING, OR USING ACIDS, BASES OR OTHER POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS.  These will be identified by the teacher and/or the lab instructions.  If you do not have goggles you may not be n the work area!

16.   Be very careful when handling and/or heating any glassware to avoid cutting or burning yourself.                    Proper procedures will be demonstrated and must be followed.  Report all broken and/or chipped glass to the teacher immediately to be cleaned up or removed from circulation.

17.   Point the open end of a test tube or flask away from yourself and others while heating.  NEVER HEAT IN ALOSED CONTAINER.  Never heat anything unless specifically instructed to do so.

18.    If you spill chemicals on yourself, wash them off with water very thoroughly AT ONCE and notify the teacher.  If chemicals get in your eyes immediately begin flushing with the EYE WASH in the front of the room next to the exit door.

19.   Use squeeze bottles, medicine droppers, pipettes and the like only for their intended purposes.  NEVER THROW OR SQUIRT ANYTHING IN THE LAB.

  20.   Never handle animals in the laboratory unless directed to do so by the teacher.  Never insert your fingers or objects into the cages or aquaria to poke, pet or feed animals.

  21.  Notify the teacher at once if an animal bites you.

  22.  Never bring poisonous plants or animals to school.

Infraction of these rules or any interference with laboratory safety will result in immediate removal and a failing grade.
