Comparing Cell Types

PROBLEM:  How are different types of cells similar and how are they different?

MATERIALS:

Procedure

PART A: Bacterial cells

Examine the bacteria slide with a compound microscope. First focus the low-power objective. Then, rotate to the medium-power and focus, and last use the high-power objective to see masses of rod-shaped cells.

Draw a bacterial cell,  labeling all the parts that you can see.

PART B: Plant Cells

Examine the leaf slide with a compound microscope. First focus the low-power objective. Then, rotate to the medium-power and focus, and last use the high-power objective and draw one cell and label all the structures you can see.

Part C: Animal Cells

Examine the animal cell slide with a compound microscope. First focus the low-power objective. Then, rotate to the medium-power and focus, and last use the high-power objective. Make a drawing of the cell and label all of the structures that you see.

Conclusion:

1.  What internal structures do you see in a bacterial cell?

2.  What internal structures do you see in a plant cell?

3.  What internal structures do you see in an animal cell?

4.  Make a Venn Diagram showing the three cell types.
