Go to the National Geographic web site:

As you view the site complete the following: (Be sure to give detail and write sentences and paragraphs)

1.     What is the function of the heart?                                                                                                                                                             

2.     What is the heart made of?

3.     Click at the bottom of the page where is says “Expand for More”. Explain how heart rate is controlled.

4.     Explain the difference between an artery and a vein.

5.     Click “continue”. Click “Put the Heart Through its Paces” Click the up arrow and notice the heart rate. Click the up arrow a second time.  Explain what happens to the heart rate as the intensity of the exercise increases.

6.     Click on the heart. On the diagram of the heart, label the right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle.

7.     What is the job of the node?

8.     What is the job of the valves?

9.     What is the cause of the “lub” sound of the heart?

10.                         Get a stethoscope from the front desk.  Clean the ear pieces with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol.  Listen to your heart sounds.

11.                          Click on the heart. Click on each structure of the heart. Label the part on your diagram and give its function.

12.                          Click on coronary artery disease.  Explain what happens in a heart attack.

13.                          Click the blocked artery and watch the animation.
