Burton was a Brethren preacher early on. It is said that he had a "Vision" in the woods when God called him to preach, which he wrote down and it was dated either June or January 1918. He couldn't feed his family on the "poundings" provided, though, and took a job at the Austinville mines. He had planned to put a sawmill on his land, and had electricity installed on his property on 7 Dec 1937, but died 12 days later.
