2 Parts of Jesus’ life

1. Hidden life – 30 years

2. Public life – 3 years

From the age of 12, Jesus knew who he was.

Luke 2:49-52

"But why did you need to search?" he asked. "You should have known that I would be in my Father's house." [50] But they didn't understand what he meant.

[51] Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them; and his mother stored all these things in her heart. [52] So Jesus grew both in height and in wisdom, and he was loved by God and by all who knew him.

  • He lived an ordinary life. That was how he was normal.

Hebrews 5:7-10

While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could deliver him out of death. And God heard his prayers because of his reverence for God. [8] So even though Jesus was God's Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. [9] In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. [10] And God designated him to be a High Priest in the line of Melchizedek.

  • Jesus had to learn obedience through what He suffered.

  • Jesus had began his pubic ministry.  The people looked at him as just a carpenter.

Mark 6:1-6

Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. [2] The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They asked, "Where did he get all his wisdom and the power to perform such miracles? [3] He's just the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us." They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.

[4] Then Jesus told them, "A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family." [5] And because of their unbelief, he couldn't do any mighty miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. [6] And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then Jesus went out from village to village, teaching.

  • His own family didn’t believe in him.

 John 7:1-5

After this, Jesus stayed in Galilee, going from village to village. He wanted to stay out of Judea where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death. [2] But soon it was time for the Festival of Shelters, [3] and Jesus' brothers urged him to go to Judea for the celebration. "Go where your followers can see your miracles!" they scoffed. [4] "You can't become a public figure if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, prove it to the world!" [5] For even his brothers didn't believe in him.

His preparing time was his silent time.

Public Life

Baptism of Jesus - John 1:29     The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

  • Affirmation from the Father is very important! A Father’s blessing is very important.
  • Jesus started with the blessing of His father.
  • His public life began at his baptism.

Luke 4:1-2

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit to go out into the wilderness, [2] where the Devil tempted him for forty days. He ate nothing all that time and was very hungry.

Luke 4:14

Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit's power. Soon he became well known throughout the surrounding country.

Luke 4:16-20

When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. [17] The scroll containing the messages of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him, and he unrolled the scroll to the place where it says:

[18] "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

for he has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim

        that captives will be released,

        that the blind will see,

that the downtrodden will be freed from their oppressors,

[19] and that the time of the Lord's favor has come."

[20] He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. Everyone in the synagogue stared at him intently.

 Luke 4:21-22

Then he said, "This Scripture has come true today before your very eyes!"

[22] All who were there spoke well of him and were amazed by the gracious words that fell from his lips. "How can this be?" they asked. "Isn't this Joseph's son?"

  • He went from not being known to being well known!

  • When his whole life became public: there was a huge area of testing.

Area where the Lovell’s will be tested within is the CHILDREN.

I am nothing. You are everything.

I am nothing. You are really everything.

I really am nothing.

My fulfillment and joy is from saying yes Lord.

How much earthbound am I?

When will we fast as a family?

What did Jesus DO?

  • Jesus cast out demons, healed the sick, he called disciples, teaching, turn the other cheek, love your enemies, give to needy in secret, fast and pray, don’t judge, miracles, raise the dead, stilled the storm

  • When drawing people to Jesus, just be friendly.

How to deal with anger!!!!

Ephes. 4:26-27

And "don't sin by letting anger gain control over you." Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, [27] for anger gives a mighty foothold to the Devil.

  • Talk about it in the light.  Bring it in the light.
  • Judging puts a curse on someone.  No right to judge unbelievers.

Jesus relationship to his Father

Luke 2:49

"But why did you need to search?" he asked. "You should have known that I would be in my Father's house."

At this point he knew his father and called him father.

Luke 3:22

and the Holy Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove. And a voice from heaven said, "You are my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with you."

At Jesus’ baptism the Father called him son.

Jesus was totally obedient and dependant on the Father.

John 5:19-23

Jesus replied, "I assure you, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. [20] For the Father loves the Son and tells him everything he is doing, and the Son will do far greater things than healing this man. You will be astonished at what he does. [21] He will even raise from the dead anyone he wants to, just as the Father does. [22] And the Father leaves all judgment to his Son, [23] so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. But if you refuse to honor the Son, then you are certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.

·        Totally dependant on the Father. Only does what he sees the father do.

John 8:28-29

So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will realize that I am he and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak what the Father taught me. [29] And the one who sent me is with me—he has not deserted me. For I always do those things that are pleasing to him."

  • We to can have that intimacy with the Father in total dependence.

    John 4:33-35

"Who brought it to him?" the disciples asked each other.

[34] Then Jesus explained: "My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.

Only thing that will bring fulfillment is doing the will of God and finishing his work.  That will be my FOOD.  No person will be able to fulfill my needs.

John 6:26-27

Jesus replied, "The truth is, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you saw the miraculous sign. [27] But you shouldn't be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that I, the Son of Man, can give you. For God the Father has sent me for that very purpose."

  • Jesus knew his purpose of God sending him.

  • Eternal life is knowing Jesus and the Father.

John 17:3

And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

  • Won’t learn much, but will change much.

John 6:38

For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do what I want.

John 6:57

I live by the power of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, those who partake of me will live because of me.

    John 8:12-20

Jesus said to the people, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."

[13] The Pharisees replied, "You are making false claims about yourself!"

[14] Jesus told them, "These claims are valid even though I make them about myself. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don't know this about me. [15] You judge me with all your human limitations, but I am not judging anyone. [16] And if I did, my judgment would be correct in every respect because I am not alone—I have with me the Father who sent me. [17] Your own law says that if two people agree about something, their witness is accepted as fact. [18] I am one witness, and my Father who sent me is the other."

[19] "Where is your father?" they asked.

Jesus answered, "Since you don't know who I am, you don't know who my Father is. If you knew me, then you would know my Father, too." [20] Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the section of the Temple known as the Treasury. But he was not arrested, because his time had not yet come.

  • Jesus was so secure that he didn’t have to defend himself. He knew where he came from.  Always talk to God as Father.
  • Muslims don’t know the Father, they just know about him.

In Gospel of John, 122 times Jesus refers to God as Father.

John 17:22-24

"I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are— [23] I in them and you in me, all being perfected into one. Then the world will know that you sent me and will understand that you love them as much as you love me.

  • The Father loves us the same way He loves Jesus.

1 John 3:1

See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called his children, and we really are! But the people who belong to this world don't know God, so they don't understand that we are his children.

  • There is security found in the Father for an individual.

Jesus’ prayer life

John 11:40-42

Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that you will see God's glory if you believe?" [41] So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, "Father, thank you for hearing me. [42] You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so they will believe you sent me."

John 17:1-2

When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. [2] For you have given him authority over everyone in all the earth. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him.

John 17:11

Now I am departing the world; I am leaving them behind and coming to you. Holy Father, keep them and care for them—all those you have given me—so that they will be united just as we are.

John 17:21

My prayer for all of them is that they will be one, just as you and I are one, Father—that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us, and the world will believe you sent me.

John 17:24

Father, I want these whom you've given me to be with me, so they can see my glory. You gave me the glory because you loved me even before the world began!

John 17:25

"O righteous Father, the world doesn't know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me.

Luke 22:41-46

He walked away, about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, [42] "Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine." [43] Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. [44] He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. [45] At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. [46] "Why are you sleeping?" he asked. "Get up and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you."

  • Always praying to the Father.
  • When there is no other place to go, go to the Father.

Luke 23:34-35

Jesus said, "Father, forgive these people, because they don't know what they are doing." And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

Luke 23:46

Then Jesus shouted, "Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!" And with those words he breathed his last.

  • His last words.

How we are to pray.

    Matthew 6:5-9

"And now about prayer. When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I assure you, that is all the reward they will ever get. [6] But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father secretly. Then your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.

[7] "When you pray, don't babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again. [8] Don't be like them, because your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! [9] Pray like this:

    Our Father in heaven,

        may your name be honored.

John 16:23-27

At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. The truth is, you can go directly to the Father and ask him, and he will grant your request because you use my name. [24] You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.

  • This was when Jesus would not be here anymore.

The Cross

John 12:20-28

Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem to attend the Passover [21] paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, "Sir, we want to meet Jesus." [22] Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.

[23] Jesus replied, "The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. [24] The truth is, a kernel of wheat must be planted in the soil. Unless it dies it will be alone—a single seed. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. [25] Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who despise their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. [26] All those who want to be my disciples must come and follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And if they follow me, the Father will honor them. [27] Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, 'Father, save me from what lies ahead'? But that is the very reason why I came! [28] Father, bring glory to your name."

Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, "I have already brought it glory, and I will do it again."

  • He was aware of the Cross and what he was to have to do.  That was the very thing he was called to do.

Matthew 16:21-23

From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that he had to go to Jerusalem, and he told them what would happen to him there. He would suffer at the hands of the leaders and the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, and he would be raised on the third day.

[22] But Peter took him aside and corrected him. "Heaven forbid, Lord," he said. "This will never happen to you!"

[23] Jesus turned to Peter and said, "Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, and not from God's."

  • We love people so strongly that we need wisdom because they might not understand.
  • Jesus very aware of the cross. This was recorded in all of the Gospels.  He knew was going to be killed but he would be raised from the dead.  God gives us a little glimpse so we are not going in blindly.

Mark 8:31-36

Then Jesus began to tell them that he, the Son of Man, would suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the leaders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, and three days later he would rise again. [32] As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and told him he shouldn't say things like that.

[33] Jesus turned and looked at his disciples and then said to Peter very sternly, "Get away from me, Satan! You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God's."

Luke 9:21-24

Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about this. [22] "For I, the Son of Man, must suffer many terrible things," he said. "I will be rejected by the leaders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. I will be killed, but three days later I will be raised from the dead."

The Cross was a huge struggle for Jesus.

Matthew 26:36-46

Then Jesus brought them to an olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, "Sit here while I go on ahead to pray." [37] He took Peter and Zebedee's two sons, James and John, and he began to be filled with anguish and deep distress. [38] He told them, "My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and watch with me."

[39] He went on a little farther and fell face down on the ground, praying, "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine." [40] Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Couldn't you stay awake and watch with me even one hour? [41] Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak!"

[42] Again he left them and prayed, "My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away until I drink it, your will be done." [43] He returned to them again and found them sleeping, for they just couldn't keep their eyes open.

[44] So he went back to pray a third time, saying the same things again. [45] Then he came to the disciples and said, "Still sleeping? Still resting? Look, the time has come. I, the Son of Man, am betrayed into the hands of sinners. [46] Up, let's be going. See, my betrayer is here!"

Matthew 13:32-42

It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants and grows into a tree where birds can come and find shelter in its branches."

[33] Jesus also used this illustration: "The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast used by a woman making bread. Even though she used a large amount of flour, the yeast permeated every part of the dough."

[34] Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables. [35] This fulfilled the prophecy that said,

"I will speak to you in parables.

I will explain mysteries hidden since the creation of the world."

[36] Then, leaving the crowds outside, Jesus went into the house. His disciples said, "Please explain the story of the weeds in the field."

[37] "All right," he said. "I, the Son of Man, am the farmer who plants the good seed. [38] The field is the world, and the good seed represents the people of the Kingdom. The weeds are the people who belong to the evil one. [39] The enemy who planted the weeds among the wheat is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the world, and the harvesters are the angels.

[40] "Just as the weeds are separated out and burned, so it will be at the end of the world. [41] I, the Son of Man, will send my angels, and they will remove from my Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil, [42] and they will throw them into the furnace and burn them. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 22:39-46

A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' [40] All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments."

[41] Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: [42] "What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?"

They replied, "He is the son of David."

[43] Jesus responded, "Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, call him Lord? For David said,

[44] 'The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit in honor at my right hand

until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.'

[45] Since David called him Lord, how can he be his son at the same time?"

[46] No one could answer him. And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

  • In times of terrible trauma or death, blood comes out of pores. Especially around temple.
  • Disciples were sleeping while Jesus was going through the trauma.  They numb out through sleeping.
  • Hindus and Muslims every year have a day of sacrifice because they know that blood atones sin.
  • Jesus knew that blood had to be shed so that our sins could be forgiven.
  • 1st generation Christians have a lot of their culture and region still in them.
  • See if it gets cloudy on Good Friday from 12-3.

What did Jesus teach us?

Matthew 10:37-39

If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. [38] If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. [39] If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give it up for me, you will find it.

Luke 14:26-27

"If you want to be my follower you must love me more than your own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, more than your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. [27] And you cannot be my disciple if you do not carry your own cross and follow me.

·        What is this cross that he is talking about?        Having Jesus FIRST. That is not always easy. So that is something we may suffer.

·        Many we will share with it are very costly and precious to follow Jesus.

Matthew 16:24

Then Jesus said to the disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me.

Mark 8:34-37

Then he called his disciples and the crowds to come over and listen. "If any of you wants to be my follower," he told them, "you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me. [35] If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will find true life. [36] And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? [37] Is anything worth more than your soul?

Luke 9:23-26

Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross daily, and follow me. [24] If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life. [25] And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose or forfeit your own soul in the process? [26] If a person is ashamed of me and my message, I, the Son of Man, will be ashamed of that person when I return in my glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.

·        It is quite clear what we must do: put off selfish ambition.  We must put that aside, shoulder the cross, and follow the Lord.  We must ask what is selfish because we want know it until the Father reveals it when we say not my will but your will be done. That is what the struggle of the cross is about.  The place of the cross is suffering.

·        Suffering is held up as a negative thing.  What comes out of suffering can not be compared to what comes out. What comes out is far, far greater.

Ask the Lord is there anything that will be getting in the way with what the Father wants to do in the life he has given me.

10/8/04

2 Cor. 4:5-10

We don't go around preaching about ourselves; we preach Christ Jesus, the Lord. All we say about ourselves is that we are your servants because of what Jesus has done for us. [6] For God, who said, "Let there be light in the darkness," has made us understand that this light is the brightness of the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

[7] But this precious treasure—this light and power that now shine within us—is held in perishable containers, that is, in our weak bodies. So everyone can see that our glorious power is from God and is not our own.

[8] We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don't give up and quit. [9] We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. [10] Through suffering, these bodies of ours constantly share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.

·        The more I know Jesus, the more I know nothing.

·        Don’t be hung up on being earthbound.

·        Where there is suffering there is fruitfulness.

·        When we have everything. We miss out on the joy of receiving.

·        When there is a huge up in our lives there is a huge down creating a collision at the Cross.

Jesus relationship with the Holy Spirit

Luke 3:21-22

One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, [22] and the Holy Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove. And a voice from heaven said, "You are my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with you."

Luke 4:1

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit to go out into the wilderness,

Luke 4:14

Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit's power. Soon he became well known throughout the surrounding country.

·        Everything that he did was with the power of the Holy Spirit on him.

Genesis 1:1-4

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. [2] The earth was empty, a formless mass cloaked in darkness. And the Spirit of God was hovering over its surface. [3] Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. [4] And God saw that it was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.

·        Holy Spirit is God.

·        Holy Spirit is given to prophets, priest and kings to do their job that was ordained by God.

·        Old Testament only the Holy Spirit on these guys.

Luke 1:11-16

Zechariah was in the sanctuary when an angel of the Lord appeared, standing to the right of the incense altar. [12] Zechariah was overwhelmed with fear. [13] But the angel said, "Don't be afraid, Zechariah! For God has heard your prayer, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son! And you are to name him John. [14] You will have great joy and gladness, and many will rejoice with you at his birth, [15] for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord. He must never touch wine or hard liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth. [16] And he will persuade many Israelites to turn to the Lord their God.

Luke 1:39-45

A few days later Mary hurried to the hill country of Judea, to the town [40] where Zechariah lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth. [41] At the sound of Mary's greeting, Elizabeth's child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

[42] Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, "You are blessed by God above all other women, and your child is blessed. [43] What an honor this is, that the mother of my Lord should visit me! [44] When you came in and greeted me, my baby jumped for joy the instant I heard your voice! [45] You are blessed, because you believed that the Lord would do what he said."

Luke 1:26-38

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, [27] to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. [28] Gabriel appeared to her and said, "Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!"

[29] Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. [30] "Don't be frightened, Mary," the angel told her, "for God has decided to bless you! [31] You will become pregnant and have a son, and you are to name him Jesus. [32] He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. [33] And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!"

[34] Mary asked the angel, "But how can I have a baby? I am a virgin."

[35] The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby born to you will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. [36] What's more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she's already in her sixth month. [37] For nothing is impossible with God."

[38] Mary responded, "I am the Lord's servant, and I am willing to accept whatever he wants. May everything you have said come true." And then the angel left.

  • Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Luke 2:25-29

Now there was a man named Simeon who lived in Jerusalem. He was a righteous man and very devout. He was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he eagerly expected the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. [26] The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord's Messiah. [27] That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, [28] Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying,

[29] "Lord, now I can die in peace!

        As you promised me,

Luke 2:30-35

    I have seen the Savior

[31] you have given to all people.

[32] He is a light to reveal God to the nations,

and he is the glory of your people Israel!"

[33] Joseph and Mary were amazed at what was being said about Jesus. [34] Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, "This child will be rejected by many in Israel, and it will be their undoing. But he will be the greatest joy to many others. [35] Thus, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul."

  • Simeon was led by the Spirit.

  • Jesus was the fulfillment of the prophecy.  He recognized who he was from reading the Torah as He went to the synagogue to read.
  • Jesus had preparation time like us so that He could be ready to do the work of the will of the Father.

Luke 24:47-49

With my authority, take this message of repentance to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: 'There is forgiveness of sins for all who turn to me.' [48] You are witnesses of all these things.

[49] "And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.

·        Jesus’ last words.

·        Disciples haven’t received the power that would come from Heaven.

Acts 1:1-15

    Dear Theophilus:

In my first book I told you about everything Jesus began to do and teach [2] until the day he ascended to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions from the Holy Spirit. [3] During the forty days after his crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time and proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. On these occasions he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.

[4] In one of these meetings as he was eating a meal with them, he told them, "Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you what he promised. Remember, I have told you about this before. [5] John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

[6] When the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, "Lord, are you going to free Israel now and restore our kingdom?"

[7] "The Father sets those dates," he replied, "and they are not for you to know. [8] But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

[9] It was not long after he said this that he was taken up into the sky while they were watching, and he disappeared into a cloud. [10] As they were straining their eyes to see him, two white-robed men suddenly stood there among them. [11] They said, "Men of Galilee, why are you standing here staring at the sky? Jesus has been taken away from you into heaven. And someday, just as you saw him go, he will return!"

·        They were obedient and waited patiently.

[12] The apostles were at the Mount of Olives when this happened, so they walked the half mile back to Jerusalem. [13] Then they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here is the list of those who were present:

    Peter,

    John,

    James,

    Andrew,

    Philip,

    Thomas,

    Bartholomew,

    Matthew,

    James (son of Alphaeus),

    Simon (the Zealot),

    and Judas (son of James).

[14] They all met together continually for prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.

[15] During this time, on a day when about 120 believers were present, Peter stood up and addressed them as follows:

Acts 2:1-4

On the day of Pentecost, seven weeks after Jesus' resurrection, the believers were meeting together in one place. [2] Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm in the skies above them, and it filled the house where they were meeting. [3] Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. [4] And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

·        Holy Spirit fell on everyone who was present.

·        First believers were Jews.

·        When Peter spoke, 3000 got saved and baptized.

·        Acts is the acts of the Holy Spirit.

1 Cor. 14:39

So, dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don't forbid speaking in tongues.

John 20:19-22

That evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! "Peace be with you," he said. [20] As he spoke, he held out his hands for them to see, and he showed them his side. They were filled with joy when they saw their Lord! [21] He spoke to them again and said, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." [22] Then he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

  • Go the same way as Jesus.
