Jesus relationship to his Father
Luke 2:49
"But why did you need to search?" he asked. "You should have known that I would be in my Father's house."
At this point he knew his father and called him father.
Luke 3:22
and the Holy Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove. And a voice from heaven said, "You are my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with you."
At Jesus’ baptism the Father called him son.
Jesus was totally obedient and dependant on the Father.
John
5:19-23
Jesus replied, "I assure you, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. [20] For the Father loves the Son and tells him everything he is doing, and the Son will do far greater things than healing this man. You will be astonished at what he does. [21] He will even raise from the dead anyone he wants to, just as the Father does. [22] And the Father leaves all judgment to his Son, [23] so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. But if you refuse to honor the Son, then you are certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.
· Totally dependant on the Father. Only does what he sees the father do.
John
8:28-29
So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will realize that I am he and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak what the Father taught me. [29] And the one who sent me is with me—he has not deserted me. For I always do those things that are pleasing to him."
John 4:33-35
"Who brought it to him?" the disciples asked each other.
[34] Then Jesus explained: "My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.
Only thing that will bring fulfillment is doing the
will of God and finishing his work. That
will be my FOOD. No person will be able
to fulfill my needs.
John
6:26-27
Jesus replied, "The truth is, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you saw the miraculous sign. [27] But you shouldn't be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that I, the Son of Man, can give you. For God the Father has sent me for that very purpose."
John
17:3
And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.
John
6:38
For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do what I want.
John
6:57
I live by the power of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, those who partake of me will live because of me.
John 8:12-20
Jesus said to the people, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."
[13] The Pharisees replied, "You are making false claims about yourself!"
[14] Jesus told them, "These claims are valid even though I make them about myself. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don't know this about me. [15] You judge me with all your human limitations, but I am not judging anyone. [16] And if I did, my judgment would be correct in every respect because I am not alone—I have with me the Father who sent me. [17] Your own law says that if two people agree about something, their witness is accepted as fact. [18] I am one witness, and my Father who sent me is the other."
[19] "Where is your father?" they asked.
Jesus answered, "Since you don't know who I am, you don't know who
my Father is. If you knew me, then you would know my Father, too." [20]
Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the section of the
In Gospel of John, 122 times Jesus refers to God as Father.
John
17:22-24
"I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are— [23] I in them and you in me, all being perfected into one. Then the world will know that you sent me and will understand that you love them as much as you love me.

John 3:1
See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called his children, and we really are! But the people who belong to this world don't know God, so they don't understand that we are his children.
Jesus’ prayer life
John 11:40-42
Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that you will see God's glory if you believe?" [41] So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, "Father, thank you for hearing me. [42] You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so they will believe you sent me."
John
17:1-2
When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. [2] For you have given him authority over everyone in all the earth. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him.
John
17:11
Now I am departing the world; I am leaving them behind and coming to you. Holy Father, keep them and care for them—all those you have given me—so that they will be united just as we are.
John
17:21
My prayer for all of them is that they will be one, just as you and I are one, Father—that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us, and the world will believe you sent me.
John
17:24
Father, I want these whom you've given me to be with me, so they can see my glory. You gave me the glory because you loved me even before the world began!
John
17:25
"O righteous Father, the world doesn't know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me.
Luke
22:41-46
He walked away, about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, [42] "Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine." [43] Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. [44] He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. [45] At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. [46] "Why are you sleeping?" he asked. "Get up and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you."
Luke
23:34-35
Jesus said, "Father, forgive these people, because they don't know what they are doing." And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
Luke
23:46
Then Jesus shouted, "Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!" And with those words he breathed his last.
How we are to pray.
Matthew 6:5-9
"And now about prayer. When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I assure you, that is all the reward they will ever get. [6] But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father secretly. Then your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.
[7] "When you pray, don't babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again. [8] Don't be like them, because your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! [9] Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be honored.
John
16:23-27
At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. The truth is, you can go directly to the Father and ask him, and he will grant your request because you use my name. [24] You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.
The Cross
John
12:20-28
Some Greeks who had come to
[23] Jesus replied, "The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. [24] The truth is, a kernel of wheat must be planted in the soil. Unless it dies it will be alone—a single seed. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. [25] Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who despise their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. [26] All those who want to be my disciples must come and follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And if they follow me, the Father will honor them. [27] Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, 'Father, save me from what lies ahead'? But that is the very reason why I came! [28] Father, bring glory to your name."
Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, "I have already brought it glory, and I will do it again."
Matthew
16:21-23
From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that he had to go
to
[22] But Peter took him aside and corrected him. "Heaven forbid, Lord," he said. "This will never happen to you!"
[23] Jesus turned to Peter and said, "Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, and not from God's."
Mark
8:31-36
Then Jesus began to tell them that he, the Son of Man, would suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the leaders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, and three days later he would rise again. [32] As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and told him he shouldn't say things like that.
[33] Jesus turned and looked at his disciples and then said to Peter very sternly, "Get away from me, Satan! You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God's."
Luke
9:21-24
Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about this. [22] "For I, the Son of Man, must suffer many terrible things," he said. "I will be rejected by the leaders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. I will be killed, but three days later I will be raised from the dead."
The Cross was a huge struggle for Jesus.
Matthew
26:36-46
Then Jesus brought them to an olive grove called
[39] He went on a little farther and fell face down on the ground, praying, "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine." [40] Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Couldn't you stay awake and watch with me even one hour? [41] Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak!"
[42] Again he left them and prayed, "My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away until I drink it, your will be done." [43] He returned to them again and found them sleeping, for they just couldn't keep their eyes open.
[44] So he went back to pray a third time, saying the same things again. [45] Then he came to the disciples and said, "Still sleeping? Still resting? Look, the time has come. I, the Son of Man, am betrayed into the hands of sinners. [46] Up, let's be going. See, my betrayer is here!"
Matthew
13:32-42
It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants and grows into a tree where birds can come and find shelter in its branches."
[33] Jesus also used this illustration: "The
[34] Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables. [35] This fulfilled the prophecy that said,
"I will speak to you in parables.
I will explain mysteries hidden since the creation of the world."
[36] Then, leaving the crowds outside, Jesus went into the house. His disciples said, "Please explain the story of the weeds in the field."
[37] "All right," he said. "I, the Son of Man, am the farmer who plants the good seed. [38] The field is the world, and the good seed represents the people of the Kingdom. The weeds are the people who belong to the evil one. [39] The enemy who planted the weeds among the wheat is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the world, and the harvesters are the angels.
[40] "Just as the weeds are separated out and burned, so it will be at the end of the world. [41] I, the Son of Man, will send my angels, and they will remove from my Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil, [42] and they will throw them into the furnace and burn them. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew
22:39-46
A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' [40] All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments."
[41] Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: [42] "What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?"
They replied, "He is the son of David."
[43] Jesus responded, "Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, call him Lord? For David said,
[44] 'The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit in honor at my right hand
until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.'
[45] Since David called him Lord, how can he be his son at the same time?"
[46] No one could answer him. And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.
What did Jesus teach us?
Matthew
10:37-39
If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. [38] If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. [39] If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give it up for me, you will find it.
Luke
14:26-27
"If you want to be my follower you must love me more than your own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, more than your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. [27] And you cannot be my disciple if you do not carry your own cross and follow me.
·
What is this cross that he is talking about? Having Jesus FIRST. That is not always
easy. So that is something we may suffer.
·
Many
we will share with it are very costly and precious to follow Jesus.
Matthew 16:24
Then Jesus said to the disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me.
Mark 8:34-37
Then he called his disciples and the crowds to come over and listen. "If any of you wants to be my follower," he told them, "you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me. [35] If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will find true life. [36] And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? [37] Is anything worth more than your soul?
Luke 9:23-26
Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross daily, and follow me. [24] If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life. [25] And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose or forfeit your own soul in the process? [26] If a person is ashamed of me and my message, I, the Son of Man, will be ashamed of that person when I return in my glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.
·
It
is quite clear what we must do: put off selfish ambition. We must put that aside, shoulder the cross,
and follow the Lord. We must ask what is
selfish because we want know it until the Father reveals it when we say not my
will but your will be done. That is what the struggle of the cross is
about. The place of the cross is
suffering.
· Suffering is held up as a negative thing. What comes out of suffering can not be compared to what comes out. What comes out is far, far greater.
Ask the Lord is there anything that will be getting in
the way with what the Father wants to do in the life he has given me.
