Day
On Friday
the 12th we left Oxford and got dropped off at Sheffield to begin our adventure. We got a
ride with Ali who is a Muslim from Iraq to Christchurch.
He was very passionate about fighting for his country, but right now
lives in Timaru and is married to a Kiwi (a person
from New Zealand). We talked to him about Christianity as well as
he shared about his religion. We then walked out of Christchurch which took about 3 hours, and
then got a ride with a guy named Matt out of the outskirts of Christchurch to Ashburton.
He was 22 years old and sped like a maniac.
We were going 140km a good bit of the time so we really were making good
time. He was also drinking beer and
chain smoking as he drove. He was a
sheep shearer in that community. We also
blessed him with $20 for gas. We didn’t
know how much he filled his tank up, but it was exactly $20. So we now had $20 left for the week. We saw
many dead birds, hedgehogs, and possums as we hitch hiked this day. We then got
a ride with a magician named Warren who owned a record store in Timaru. He didn’t
have room for us to stay with him so we first went to see how much it would
cost to stay in a hostel. It would be
$24 for one person to stay. We didn’t
have enough money, but Warren said that he would cover it. We didn’t have a peace about that so we went
for a walk to a park. As were walking
through the park we see a group of people gathered together listening to a guy
talk. As we got closer, we noticed that
they were YWAMers sharing with a youth group. It was Nate,
Hannah, and Marieke.
They had made a contact with a church in town and were ministering to
them for the weekend. The pastor asked
us if we had a place to stay for the night and offered to contact a family for
us to stay with. So we saw God provide a
place for us the first night of Faith Week with the Wilson family.
God
taught us through this first day how to relate to the homeless and those who
must walk for their transportation.
