10/12/04                                    “The Nature of God…”

The Seven Natures of God

  • Nature of God reveals his greatness. Nature is not done by choice.
  1. Trinity
    • One living God, with 3 identities
    • Trinity is not found in the Bible.
    • Unity and diversity represent the Trinity.
    • Sebellianism – one person who presented him self as Father, or the Son, or the Holy Spirit.  God is one person.
    • Arianism – God is Father, Son is created being, Holy Spirit is power of God
    • Tri-Theism – three different Gods
    • Pantheism – everything is God
    • Dualism – in personal, ying and yang, occult picture of God, one light and one dark view of God
    • Poly-theism – many Gods that are all equal
    • Monolatrism – There are many Gods to worship but only one that truly deserves worship

1 Cor. 8:5

According to some people, there are many so-called gods and many lords, both in heaven and on earth.

Judges 10:6

Again the Israelites did evil in the Lord's sight. They worshiped images of Baal and Ashtoreth, and the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and Philistia. Not only this, but they abandoned the Lord and no longer served him at all.

Judges 11:24

You keep whatever your god Chemosh gives you, and we will keep whatever the Lord our God gives us.

·        Recognizing the many Gods that are represented in the Bible.  They are all created beings that are not equal to the one true God. They are gods over the nations.

John 14:28

Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really love me, you will be very happy for me, because now I can go to the Father, who is greater than I am.

·        Talking about a relational reverence.

John 8:28

So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will realize that I am he and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak what the Father taught me.

·        Jesus listens to the Father.

John 16:13

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

·        Holy Spirit listens to the Father.

·        2 and 3 head listen to the Father.  Why don’t the people listen to the Father.

·        Its all about order and function in the role of each in the Trinity.

·        Elohim – plural word many more than 1 God head

Genesis 1:26

Then God said, "Let us make people in our image, to be like ourselves. They will be masters over all life—the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the livestock, wild animals, and small animals."

Zech. 10:12

I will make my people strong in my power, and they will go wherever they wish by my authority. I, the Lord, have spoken!"

Psalm 45:7

You love what is right and hate what is wrong.

Therefore God, your God, has anointed you,

pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.

·        one Elihom speaking to another Elihim

Hebrews 1:8-10

But to his Son he says,

"Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.

Your royal power is expressed in righteousness.

[9] You love what is right and hate what is wrong.

Therefore God, your God, has anointed you,

pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else."

[10] And,

"Lord, in the beginning you laid the foundation of the earth,

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

·        Theos used here instead of Elohim. One Theos speaking to another 2 Theos.

Isaiah 48:16

Come closer and listen. I have always told you plainly what would happen so you would have no trouble understanding."

And now the Sovereign Lord and his Spirit have sent me with this message:

·        Best Scripture for a Reverence of the Trinity.

Proverbs 30:4

Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fists? Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his name—and his son's name? Tell me if you know!

·        People of the old testament new about Jesus and his Father.

·        Hebrew Yeshuwah

·        IESOUS Greek

·        Jesus English

·        These mean salvation.

Isaiah 12:2-4

See, God has come to save me.

I will trust in him and not be afraid.

    The Lord God is my strength and my song;

        he has become my salvation."

[3] With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation! [4] In that wonderful day you will sing:

    "Thank the Lord!

        Praise his name!

Tell the world what he has done.

        Oh, how mighty he is!

    Galatians 3:8

What's more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would accept the Gentiles, too, on the basis of their faith. God promised this good news to Abraham long ago when he said, "All nations will be blessed through you."

·        Gospel preached to Abraham. People of the old testament heard the Gospel.

Romans 10:13-17

For "Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

[14] But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? [15] And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

[16] But not everyone welcomes the Good News, for Isaiah the prophet said, "Lord, who has believed our message?" [17] Yet faith comes from listening to this message of good news—the Good News about Christ.

·        Isaiah new about salvation.

Psalm 2:7

The king proclaims the Lord's decree:

"The Lord said to me, 'You are my son.

Today I have become your Father.

·        Son of God is spoken of here.

Acts 13:33

in that God raised Jesus. This is what the second psalm is talking about when it says concerning Jesus,

    'You are my Son.

Today I have become your Father.'

·        Look at this scripture in another translation.

·        Each part of the trinity claims to be God and is called God.

Isaiah 9:6

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. And the government will rest on his shoulders. These will be his royal titles: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

·        Shows humanity and God.

Romans 9:5

Their ancestors were great people of God, and Christ himself was a Jew as far as his human nature is concerned. And he is God, who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

Hebrews 9:8

By these regulations the Holy Spirit revealed that the Most Holy Place was not open to the people as long as the first room and the entire system it represents were still in use.

The Lord appeared again to Abraham while he was camped near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. One day about noon, as Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent,

Genesis 19:24

Then the Lord rained down fire and burning sulfur from the heavens on Sodom and Gomorrah.

Exodus 3:2-4

Suddenly, the angel of the Lord appeared to him as a blazing fire in a bush. Moses was amazed because the bush was engulfed in flames, but it didn't burn up. [3] "Amazing!" Moses said to himself. "Why isn't that bush burning up? I must go over to see this."

[4] When the Lord saw that he had caught Moses' attention, God called to him from the bush, "Moses! Moses!"

    "Here I am!" Moses replied.

·        This was JESUS.

    1 Tim. 3:16

Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith:

    Christ appeared in the flesh

and was shown to be righteous by the Spirit.

    He was seen by angels

and was announced to the nations.

He was believed on in the world

and was taken up into heaven.

·        Holy Spirit – is God and not power

2 Cor. 3:17

Now, the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, he gives freedom.

John 16:13

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

Acts 5:3-4

Then Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. [4] The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren't lying to us but to God."

·        God the Holy Spirit that Calls People.

Hebrews 9:14

Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our hearts from deeds that lead to death so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

·        Trinity only been argued recently.

Romans 1:19-21

For the truth about God is known to them instinctively. God has put this knowledge in their hearts. [20] From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God.

[21] Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn't worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. The result was that their minds became dark and confused.

·        God’s nature can be discerned in nature.

·        For love to exist there must be two. For it to be given away there must be three.

1 John 4:8-16

But anyone who does not love does not know God—for God is love.

[9] God showed how much he loved us by sending his only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. [10] This is real love. It is not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

[11] Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. [12] No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love has been brought to full expression through us.

[13] And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. [14] Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. [15] All who proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. [16] We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in him.

·        God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

·        God must be trinity.

  1. Personality

A.     Emotions

B.     Will

C.     Intellect

1.      Know

2.      Think

3.      Reason

4.      Remember

  • God experiences our grief and sorrows.

Hebrews 4:15

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin.

  • To greive God is to say no to what God says yes to.

Psalm 95:10

For forty years I was angry with them, and I said,

'They are a people whose hearts turn away from me.

They refuse to do what I tell them.'

Save me from my persecutors—rescue me!

  • Do I hate Sin.

Zeph. 3:17

  • Bring joy to God.

    Matthew 26:39

He went on a little farther and fell face down on the ground, praying, "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine."

  • He went a little farther. God has the ability to make choices.

  • God has an intellect.

     Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

  • God Knows

Isaiah 1:18

"Come now, let us argue this out," says the Lord. "No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you as white as wool.

  • God will reason with us.

  • God has the ability to remember. Important regarding warfare.

1 Samuel 15:2

This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'I have decided to settle accounts with the nation of Amalek for opposing Israel when they came from Egypt.

Deut. 25:17-19

"Never forget what the Amalekites did to you as you came from Egypt. [18] They attacked you when you were exhausted and weary, and they struck down those who were lagging behind. They had no fear of God. [19] Therefore, when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies in the land he is giving you as a special possession, you are to destroy the Amalekites and erase their memory from under heaven. Never forget this!

  • What happened to Amakekites?  They were annihilated from the face of the earth.  Wiped out whole people group.  They don’t exist.

  • Character (moral) attributes is different than natural attributes.

  • Where there is no faith so God moves in anger and wrath.
  • God seeks for faithful man or women.  One person can change a course of a nation.

Exodus 40:34-35

Then the cloud covered the Tabernacle, and the glorious presence of the Lord filled it. [35] Moses was no longer able to enter the Tabernacle because the cloud had settled down over it, and the Tabernacle was filled with the awesome glory of the Lord.

    Philip. 2:6

Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God.

·        Jesus existed as spirit before becoming man.  Incarnation brought forth a change in the Trinity.

John 1:14

So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father.

·        Jesus put on a body than becoming a body in the Old Testament.

Hebrews 2:14-16

Because God's children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—Jesus also became flesh and blood by being born in human form. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the Devil, who had the power of death. [15] Only in this way could he deliver those who have lived all their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

[16] We all know that Jesus came to help the descendants of Abraham, not to help the angels.

·        After his resurrection Jesus said he was not a Spirit.

John 20:26-27

Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. He said, "Peace be with you." [27] Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don't be faithless any longer. Believe!"

·        Today there is a man sitting on the throne in heaven.

1 Tim. 2:5

For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and people. He is the man Christ Jesus.

  1. Eternity and infinity of Being

·        Infinite being – without beginning and without ending

·        We are finite – we have a beginning and without ending

·        Angels are finite, humans are finite.

Deut. 33:27

The eternal God is your refuge,

and his everlasting arms are under you.

    He thrusts out the enemy before you;

it is he who cries, 'Destroy them!'

Psalm 102:27

    But you are always the same;

        your years never end.

    Hebrews 9:14

Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our hearts from deeds that lead to death so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

  • We are study the Word. Written for the humble and simple.

2 Tim. 2:15

Work hard so God can approve you. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.

  • God doesn’t desire to hide the truth but to reveal it.

John 16:13

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

  1. omnipresent  - everywhere at all times. (Scriptures refer to God as potentially omnipresent)  God of the tree, not in the tree. God chooses when and where he choose to dwell.

  • Is God in the Heart of Satin?  Is God in the Heart of a non-believer?   NO NO
  • God did not put His being in his creation.
  • All that God created is outside of God.  Man is not an extension of God.
  • Must have faith to receive the Spirit.

John 5:14

But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, "Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you."

Jude 1:18-19

that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to enjoy themselves in every evil way imaginable. [19] Now they are here, and they are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They live by natural instinct because they do not have God's Spirit living in them.

 Ephes. 2:12

In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from God's people, Israel, and you did not know the promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope.

Romans 8:8-11

That's why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.

[9] But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them are not Christians at all.) [10] Since Christ lives within you, even though your body will die because of sin, your spirit is alive because you have been made right with God. [11] The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as he raised Christ from the dead, he will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living within you.

  • Nonbelievers don’t have the Spirit of God in them.

1 John 4:16

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in him.

God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

 1 Cor. 2:12

And God has actually given us his Spirit (not the world's spirit) so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

 1 Cor. 3:16

Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?

1 Cor. 6:19

Or don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,

Galatians 4:4-6

But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. [5] God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. [6] And because you Gentiles have become his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, and now you can call God your dear Father.

2 Tim. 1:14

With the help of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard what has been entrusted to you.

  • Holy Spirit dwells in believers. That is the Gift of God.

Jeremiah 23:24

Can anyone hide from me? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?" asks the Lord.

Psalm 139:7-10

I can never escape from your spirit!

I can never get away from your presence!

    [8] If I go up to heaven, you are there;

if I go down to the place of the dead, you are there.

[9] If I ride the wings of the morning,

if I dwell by the farthest oceans,

[10] even there your hand will guide me,

and your strength will support me.

  1. Omnipotent (limited)-he has power that is restrained

His character limits his nature. God cannot do anything contradicting his character of wisdom.

Titus 1:2

This truth gives them the confidence of eternal life, which God promised them before the world began—and he cannot lie.

  • It would be a violation of God’s character.

  • Jesus lived as a man full of the Spirit on the Earth.

  • When God makes a promise his freedom to exercise a change is limited because he can’t lie.

  • The moral worth of worship is based on our free will.

  • God’s will cannot be fully revealed.

  7. Omniscient -  God knows all that is knowable.  No objects of knowledge that can be held from Him.

·       Power must be obtained on my knees.
