Trevithick Commemoration
The steam engine was built by Richard Trevithick and travelled from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, to nearby Abercynon on it's first journey in 1804. The new �2 coin shows the engine known as the Penydarren steam engine.
The steam engine made history as the first high-pressured steam engine to run effectivly on metal rails. the steam engine was able to pull upto six times its own weight. on Feb 28 1804 Trevithick's engine hauled 10 tons of iron, five wagons and 70 people on a 9 mile trip. the journy took 4hr 5mins. the engine managed a top speed of 5mph.
