Promises Made Under Starlight

"Hey, why don't we make a promise?         "Umm, if you get really famous and I'm ever in a  bind....you come save me, all right?"

"Words aren't the only thing that tell people what you're thinking..."

-Final Fantasy VII

music and lyrics by Jonathan Tan

Where have all the people gone?
Where have all our friends gone?
I have no one if not for you,
I'd be nowhere without you to
See me through

And words aren't the only way
To tell someone how you feel
But there will come a day,
I promise you, when I find the
Courage to tell the truth

This unspoken friendship
That we have
This fragile bond that we
Both share
Dare I risk it on a love affair?

Chorus:

And after all that we've
been through I can't believe
We're standing face to face,
Under the stars with not a
Word to say
Do you love me?
Or am I just the girl from
your memory?
But just make me a promise
Under starlight,
And I'll be yours till the
Day I die

So many things that lie ahead
So many things you want to forget
But this moment's ours my
Fears can wait
So take my hand it'll be ok

This pain you bear
I also share
Can't you find what you've lost
Here in my heart
And leave the past
Just this once?

[repeat chorus]

Above:  Tifa Lockheart from Final Fantasy VII.  This song is intended for a female vocalist.  The story of the song was inspired by a scene in Final Fantasy VII in which our hero and heroine have a typically hard time expressing their feelings for each other!.  I had a lot of fun writing this song and trying to put the scene into words and music. The lyrics came easily since there are so many tempting scriptural references.  I also couldn't resist making some small references in the music to Nobuo Uematsu's  original score.
