Strategy for Speeding Up Reading Comprehension Tests

Step 1:  Preview the reading passage.

• Read the first paragraph quickly.
• Read the last paragraph quickly.
• Glance through the reading passage and underline key words.

•  Read over the multiple-choice questions.
•  Underline key words in the questions.

•  Underline sentences that give answers to the multiple-choice questions.
•  When you see an answer to a question, answer the question immediately.  Don’t wait until you finish the whole passage.
•  Don’t get bogged down with new vocabulary.  If you don’t understand a word, skip it the first time you read.  If you still can’t answer     the questions, then try to guess the meaning of new words from context.  Remember, speed is important!
