Final Presentation:  My Plan to Solve the Crime Problem in the United States
Instructions

This presentation wil be an individual presentation on the theme of crime in the U.S. based on the material we studied in Chapter 8 of Noteworthy. Imagine that you have just been elected President of the United States and you are giving a speech to the nation about your plan to solve the problem of crime.  Your speech should have an introduction,  three strategies for fighting crime and a conclusion.  Each strategy should also contain practical steps to make the strategy work.  Don't just present some vague good ideas about fighting crime; give concrete ways that each strategy will be carried out.  Be creative!  Your presentation should last for 7-10 minutes and include a Power Point presentation with at least 5 slides.

Step 1:  Develop your anti-crime strategies

Brainstorm as many strategies as you can think of for solving crime.  If you need ideas, look back at the notes you took for Chapter 8 or do some brief research on the Internet.
For some crime prevention strategies used in England, click here .  You can also see President Bush's strategies to fight crime by improving society by clicking here .  Look under the title "economic security".  Now that you have some strategies, pick the three strategies that are the strongest.  Organize them into a logical order that will be easy to present.

Strategy #1 __________________________________________________________

Strategy #2  _________________________________________________________

Strategy #3  _________________________________________________________

Step 2:  Develop your practical steps for each strategy

Now you need to get some practical steps that can be used to implement your strategies.

    For example:

Strategy for Fighting Crime:  Raise awareness of citizens to avoid crime.
  • Step #1:  Provide free self-defense classes.
  • Step #2:  Create a national website and hotline to educate people about crime prevention.
  • Step #3:  Link neighborhood watch groups with police support.

Remember to make your steps as practical as possible: avoid ideas that are difficult to implement.

   For example:
  • Pay one person in each neighborhood to watch for crime (too expensive and hard to implement)
  • Link neighborhood watch groups with police support (possible to implement)

Step 3:  Make an introduction and conclusion

Now that you have your strategies and steps, you are ready to make and introduction and conclusion that are clear, creative, and concise (short).  Make sure that your three strategies are clearly laid out in your introduction and restated in your conclusion.  For helpful tips on structuring your presentation, click here .

Step 4:  Prepare your visual aids

Now you can make your Power Point slideshow and outline/cuecards.  Your Power Point should include at least 5 slides.  Remember that you need to present from your outline and not from the Power Point.  For more tips on visual aids, click here .

Step 5:  Rehearse your presentation

Each time you rehearse your presentation, you will be more confident and your presentation will be more connected.
Don't forget to practice the verbal part of your presentation using your outline/cuecards and standing in front of a mirror.  You can also time yourself.  Make sure you are using good connecting words and are speaking clearly and at appropriate volume.  For more tips on rehearsing, click here .
